I'm sus that the cops and the network have a bit of a deal - the network gets good footage and gets to sell adds and cops get to show what they want. It seems the cops are showing common petty crimes and then showing the offenders receiving exaggerated treatment. I think the aim from the cops is to reduce crime while the network gets to sell adds, very cheap advertising for the cops really.

These types of deals occur in the media all the time.

Eg - Black hawk down - Military offered hardware free of change in exchange for degree of editorial control.

numerous other boring examples.

ANd i am not being critical its a good idea for both parties involved.

What really pissed me off was an earlier episode where some guy who was a full time carer for his mum was the victim of a full blown forced entry raid. The fucking cops were wearing fairly plain clothes and when they entered the bloke raised a knife in self defence thinking they were randoms coming to rob him. luckily he quickly came to his senses and dropped the knife. The cop admitted that a second more and he may have shot him dead!!!!!!!!

The bloke had a couple hundred bucks and 1 ounce of WEED!!!!!!!!!!!! this punishment is not proportional to the crime!!!!
