Police sniffer dogs tracking the scent of an axe-wielding man who attacked a speed camera operator in Carrum Downs last night turned out to have a nose for drug crime instead, leading officers to a cannabis hydroponic set-up at a nearby house.

During the search for the attacker, the dogs led police to a house in Spencer Drive where they discovered the cannabis hydro set-up in the back room and garage.

A Carrum Downs man, 60, and a woman, 37, were both charged with cultivating drug dependence. Both have been bailed.

Axeman attacks speed camera

A speed camera operator is in shock after a man armed with an axe smashed his vehicle, inflicting cuts, Acting Sergeant Cam Hunt tells 3AW radio host Darren James.

Police say the 40-year-old Frankston speed camera operator - who was left in shock with cuts to his hand - is lucky to be alive after last night's attack.

Acting Sergeant Cam Hunt said the speed camera operator was parked on the side of Wedge Road about 10.35pm when a man smashed the side window on the driver's side.

"Fortunately the camera operator was sitting in the passenger side at the time," Acting Sergeant Hunt told radio 3AW.

"He then thrust an axe through the window and tried to attack the speed camera operator.

"He bolted from the scene on foot through open paddocks."

Acting Sergeant Hunt said the camera operator was deeply upset by the attack.

"As you can imagine (he) was very shaken.

"He's not a police officer, he's a public servant and he's not trained to deal with this type of confrontation

"He's got cut to both hands and obviously was in shock.

"It's not overly common but it certainly is of some concern."

Acting Sergeant Hunt said the camera operator was unable to photograph his attacker.

"The camera operator has an audible alarm that he sets off ... and he activated that alarm.

"The camera was set up in a certain direction ... a correct angle and it's not something that you can just turn around.

"I don't think he was in a position to operate a camera."

Acting Sergeant Hunt said police were following up several lines of inquiry, the most likely being that the man was a disgruntled driver who returned with an axe after being snapped by the camera.

He described the attacker as about 177 centimetres tall and wearing a dark bomber jacket, dark trousers and a beanie.

Yeah, just crazy stuff.

Thankfully, it wasn't me that got nabbed. I live so far out past the black stump that a drug dog would be worried about where its next tin of food was coming from. There won't be any accidental discoveries around here, unless the dog's handlers have 4WD and a awful lot of time on their hands.
