A STRONG smell of cannabis coming from a boarded up house has led police to a hydroponics drug set-up in south west Sydney.

Acting on reports of suspicious behaviour at the premises, police executed a search warrant at a home on Virgil Avenue, Chester Hill, at about 3pm (AEST) yesterday.

Officers seized about 217 cannabis plants and a hydroponics equipment from the house.

A 51-year-old Chester Hill man has been charged with supply prohibited drug and cultivate prohibited drug.

He has been refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court today.
