As straight as a die

Meaning

Completely straight.

Origin

as straight as a dieThis is an odd simile when one considers that the die here is the singular of dice - hardly objects that appear straight. It makes more sense when we realize that straight means correct and true, rather than 'as the crow flies'.

The phrase originated as 'as smooth as a die', no doubt referring to the smoothness of the bone that dice were made from. This dates back to at least the 16th century. For example, Jehan Palsgrave's Lesclarcissement de la langue françoyse, 1530:

"Make this borde as smothe as a dyce"

It migrated to 'as true as a die' in the 18th century, as found in John Gay's Songs & Ball., New Song on New Similies, 1732:

"You'll know me truer than a die."

By the 19th century it had become as we know it now - 'as straight as a die. The first known record of that form comes from the USA, in The Janesville Gazette, April 1871:

"I'm a racing man and up to a thing or two: but am as straight as a die for honesty."

Despite their reputation for smooth/true/straightness, dice weren't always straight. Modern dice are now almost always made so that the opposite faces add up to seven and of a material that is of even density throughout. Some earlier 'crooked' dice (or as they would have been then called, dies) were weighted to favour particular numbers or may have had more than one face that showed the same number.

See also - the die has been cast.

As for having fun while stoned, I'm pretty sure Nitrous Oxide is the best I've had  :smurf: ..especially with Led Zeppelins 'No Quarter' playing, laying on my back with my eyes closed and the entire universe spinning like a record with my head at it's centre ..and that vibration, it's like the hum of numbness, intensified by the thc :xcited:

Another personal favourite is riding dirtbikes flat-out through the forestry. Sometimes the intensity is almost overwhelming and the occasional near-death experience will have my laughing my guts out inside my helmet :) Adrenalin is a great companion to thc imo, even if it does tend to straighten you out a bit quicker :)

Sex is the obvious one though. Anyone who doesn't enjoy sex stoned has either got really bad pot or is having really bad sex. It's best to avoid either :)

I've got to disagree with you about the alcohol Rob :peace:

If it's in moderation, there's no problem ime. A few beers and a joint with your workmates has got to be one of the best ways to relax after a hard days work. I understand this isn't the case for anyone who's had problems with the demon drink.

I dunno mate, but I always assume "straight as a die" reffered tp the die you use for making thread through steel. Still used today of course, it was a common household tool for handymen for generations, and again, stil is.

it's a solid hardened steel or stainless steel device, with thred cut into it with intermitent gaps to allow the steel cut out of the hole to fall free.

It has to be exactingly straight and true, or else the hole you "die" won't accept the bolt that needs to be thread in the place. I used to "Tap" steel all day with a "die" when I was young, the first full time job I had. Not all day, every day, but alarge part of the job. We made towbars,a nd the part thatsticks out the back which the ball sticks through, has two threaded holes which bolt up underneath the towbar, these are "tapped" with a "die". While tapping the towbar ends out, if I bent a die, it was thrown out. (you have to really try hard to bend a die, they're seriously tough). Of course any hole with a thread in it has been "tapped" with a "die", I just thought most people have had tpo undo the towbar tounge at some stage and know what I'd be refering to.

I never even considered it to do with tossing dice. unless that's all just a joke and I missed it? :applause: I often miss subtle jokes. Too much gear in my system at any one time.

yeah mate, I know there are plenty of people who enjoy an aile with a smoke. When I lived in the bush, almost every country fella i smoked with had to have a beer with it too.

but I've seen guys turn the concept of "no-one goes agro while smoking" on it's head because they drank and smoked together, and it magnified their alcohol side.

i suppose we're all just individuals.

Totally stoned is best without alcohol. Although a couple of quiet beers is ok. I used to eats heaps of junk food and knock back heaps of piss too but that ends the fun too soon.

Just a cup of tea will do me nowadays.

oh yeah - I'll have one of those home made anzac bickies - thanks muchly. :bongon:

I find that if I have a smoke first then drink later I can drink all night without the agro. If I drink first (alcohol makes me very agro)and then smoke I usually throw up, if I just drink then I want to fight and then I get hurt :yahoo: . So I just smoke. :applause:
