POLICE have seized 20kg of high-grade cannabis and a crossbow in a raid on a Gold Coast property today.

 

Nerang police, acting on a Crime Stoppers tip-off, raided the home in The Domain about 7.15am.

 

They found a garden shed which was allegedly being used as an elaborate hydroponic marijuana growing hothouse.

 

Nerang police officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Gary Symons said it was a surpisingly large haul.

 

"Twenty kilos of cannabis is larger than we usually see in the suburbs," he said.

 

"The plants were all more than a metre tall, in very good condition and with large heads. The shed was all sealed up with material over the windows and whirly birds on the roof."

 

The marijuana had a street value of about $160,000. Police also seized 15 heat lamps, an air extraction and filtration system, fertilisers and other equipment, as well as a crossbow.

 

A 35-year-old man was helping police with their inquiries.

 

Sen Sgt Symons said more raids were planned in the coming weeks. He urged residents to report neighbours with suspiciously taped windows, excessive whirly birds or lighting.

 

"We won't tolerate the cultivation of cannabis in our suburbs," he said.
