'There on a cobblestone street, awash in the glow of lanterns, the smugglers entered a small house illuminated by candles. They were greeted by an elderly woman whose skin was wrinkled by age and weather. She wore a peasant dress and sandals. She ushered them to a table, and sat them down in the shadows. Filling a clay bowl with loose handful of yellow buds, she set them afire. She leaned into the curling smoke, and cupped her creased hands, sweeping the fumes into her nostrils. She inhaled deeply, opened her eyes, favored Alan with a smile that featured no more than three teeth, sighed and said "Buena." With outstretched fingers she urged the smoke in his direction and invited him to do the same.

Alan, moved to poetry by the colour of the buds alone ,did so eagerly, discovering to his satisfaction that "buena" did not come close.

"You are happy?" said Minguel.

"I am happy", Alan said. '....
