Tiny tiny bugs in waste tank

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone

I have just discovered tiny insects in my waste run off tank

( I use run to waste system). They are on the surface of the

waste nutes, sometimes crawling sometimes skipping across

the surface. They are only about 1 mm long. Does any one

know what they are..how they got there...and best treatment.

Also is there any chance they have damaged the plant to a

large degree.

Any info much appreciated

Regards

aussie

are they white??

i was getting the same thing in my recirc system.. little tiny white bugs.. looked to me like tiny white fly.. but i didnt have any bugs on my plants...

all i did was, using a filter.. just scooping them out.. they didnt seem to do any damage to the plants.. but when i washed the perlite.. as i was going to re use it.. i noticed shit loads of them in the medium too.. plants didnt seem to suffer at all tho... i thought it might have been the rainwater i was using.. since ive installed the new tank they havent come back..

not sure if its the same as what your getting tho..

yeah i was gonna say scarid fly

have had this problem myself a few times

for the flys you can spray the room and plants with pyrethrum that will get rid of most of them and scatter a few sticky fly paper traps around ya room that should sort the rest of the adults out

now for the larvae that will be in your medium you need to use a drench to get rid of them i used pyrethrum for that as well just at a lower dose and it worked good have also heard a strongish dose of H2o2 can do the trick as well

but thats if they are scarid flies a photo would be good or at least a better discription of them

cheerz

My digi camera goes out of focus when trying to get

a pic as they are so damn small. From what you guys

have said, I am pretty sure it is scarid fly larvae, as I

do have a problem with small black tiny fly type insects

around the plant base and top of the perlite. So I am

guessing that the small ones in the tank are the young.

Does anyone know how strong I can make a water

solution with Oxyplus to kill the mongrels without

damaging the plant.I do have a scarid fly drench

which is supposedly no longer available, but I really

don't want to use any thing really nasty chemical wise.

thanks again
