South Australian police say they plan to boost the number of officers trained to do roadside drug tests.

The police say nearly 11,000 motorists were tested in the past year , with 336 testing positive, mostly to methamphetamines.

Other drugs detected included cannabis or ecstasy and some drivers tested positive to a combination of the three.

The offenders were usually male, between 19 and 38.

The police say there are plans to train 250 more officers to carry out the tests.

The State Government says extra money in the Budget means police can now do four times as many tests as the year before.
