Rudd never put out of joint

July 11, 2007 - 8:35AM

Labor MP Peter Garrett smoked it when he was in his 20s and former US president Bill Clinton said he "did not inhale", but for Labor leader Kevin Rudd marijuana has never been part of his scene.

Former Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett came under the spotlight this week after Silverchair singer Daniel Johns said he had smoked joints with the MP and U2 rocker Bono.

Johns later retracted the comment, saying it was a joke and Mr Garrett released a statement admitting he smoked marijuana when he was in his 20s.

When asked today if he had ever smoked marijuana, Mr Rudd said it has never been part of his scene.

"Never, never, never, not a part of my scene," Mr Rudd told the Nine Network.

"I've always had a very tough line on this stuff, really, really hard line.

"I'm in John Howard's camp on this one, we have a unity ticket."

Anyone hoping for a change from Labour may be in for disappointment. I still think his government would be less hard line though. Labour may be more likely to treat it as a health problem. Personally I am voting Greens next election.

Yeah if the Greens (aka the watermelon party, green on the outside, red in the middle) had any other socially responsible policies then I'd vote for them too. I cant bring myself to do it simply for their stand on weed, which they probabaly wouldn't enact anyway,...even if they did, by some ,miracle get in. ;-)

Yea you can see just looking at Rudd he would have been one of the geeky goody-two-shoes in his younger day ... shunning cannabis whilst 'shouting' the bar down at the local pub

get him to attend a CWA meeting and give him some tea and scones (with an acid tab in the scone) that will wake the bastard up and give him something to think about :)

HAHA Frazzle, i doubt he'd even set foot in a pub. :yahoo:

Still haven't decided on who to vote for. Rudd is slight favourite at the moment, only because he hasn't developed a brown stain on the bridge of his nose yet from being up G.W. Bush's arse. :)

Both chasing the conformists votes. Bunch of fkn losers...

Man, you need to read up on the greens policies and not in the herald sun either, try there web site.

If you read up on there policies I think you will find there based on logic more than popularity. They are also the only party that doesnt take donations from corporations, there for they have already got my vote and I havnt even got to there drug policy yet

Australian Greens Policies!

And check out labors policy page, nothing just a bunch of speeches (propaganda). Now how can I be expected to vote for someone who wont tell me what his policies are before election <_<

On dicey issues, things that the large amount of voters seem to be consolidated on, such as anti-pot, it'd be suicide for a politiican leading the polls to say otherwise than to support the staus quoe on a thing like this. No doubt Rudd's never sat in on a sesh, but given marijuana law is stae and not federal for the most part, and that if I had to stand guilty before Hoard or Rudd on almost Anything, none the less pot, I still think we'd be better off with Kevin Rudd. At least it didn;t effect his judgmnt when choosing Peter Garrett (who obviously smokes) and probably other labor front benchers; where-as if Howard thought anyone on his front bench sipped weed, he'd sack em.

Still, things aren't ooking good for drug law reofrm in Australia these days is it.

Yeah if the Greens (aka the watermelon party, green on the outside, red in the middle)

The 'watermelon' insult is usually hurled at Greens by jackbooted nazi fascists, most with naked John Howard and Lyndon LaRouche pics on their underwear and swastikas tattooed on their earlobes. Kid you not. If you've catcalled any Greens with this lately, go check your earlobes in a mirror. If you think accusing anyone of being a communist is an effective insult, get back in your Tardis and head for 1954. The Greens are not Marxist, socialist, etc. Capitalism is OK by them, but they'd certainly like to see less disparity between the highest and lowest pay rates in Australian workplaces.

The Greens have NOTHING BUT socially responsible policies. Social justice is what they're all about. If you think otherwise, like jabez said, you don't know their policies.

...and before you ask, no, I'm not a Green Party member.

The Democrats have some good drug policies too but I'll never forgive Meg Lees for the GST.

Still, things aren't looking good for drug law reform in Australia these days is it.

No, not one bit.

However, I think we've got a much better chance for implementing some cannabis reform with KRudd than HoWARd. It may take some convincing, but at least I suspect that KRudd will listen, where HoWARd would just stick his fingers in his ears and start humming Broadway show tunes on the first mention of the word 'cannabis'...
