A TEENAGER will spend three months in detention for starting up a profitable business selling marijuana to his school peers.

The 17-year-old today pleaded guilty in the Brisbane Supreme Court to trafficking and possessing a dangerous drug between December 2004 to February last year.

The court heard he eventually passed on the operation to two females he went to high school with in Brisbane.

The women, aged 18 and 17, also pleaded guilty to trafficking and possessing a dangerous drug between December 2005 and February last year.

The trio have not been named because the male and one of the women were juveniles when the offences occurred.

The male's defence lawyer Tim Ryan told the court his client became a heavy marijuana user when he hurt his collarbone in a motorcycling accident.

The subsequent loss of his job prompted him to sell cannabis to supplement his income.

He later told police he had about 500 customers and was selling two ounces of cannabis daily, mainly to school students.

However, Justice John Byrne said he suspected that volume of customers was a "slight exaggeration".

The court was told the male grew concerned people at the school were becoming suspicious about his activities.

So much so, he decided to hand over the operation to the two girls, giving them scales and teaching them how to divide the drug and distribute it in bags.

Justice Byrne acknowledged the male's parents were regular users of the drug, growing up in an environment "where drug use was apparent to you".

However, to deter others from following in his footsteps, Justice Byrne imposed a three-month detention order on him, as well as two years' probation.

Justice Byrne said the circumstances of his co-accused were "very different" because they had only been at the controls of the operation for about two months.

The women were sentenced to detention orders to be served in the community.

Convictions were recorded against all of them.

Ah damm that kid has some promise in him !!
