Aquaponics - fish creating your nutrients

Recommended Posts

Just a sales pitch from a good site on it

Aquaponics by definition is the combination of aquaculture and hydroponics. The beauty of aquaponics is that in the combining of the two they equal out the negative aspects in each of them. In other words, the sum of the two when combined is greater than the sum of the two individuals.

Nutrient rich fish water is pumped from the fish tank into gravel beds, where plants growing in the gravel extract the nutrients from the water. The water then drains back into the fish tank cleaned of excess nutrients and freshly oxygenated.

The basic designs I cover here are either continuous flow, or flood and drain. Though the continuous flow systems can be adapted to become flood and drain by the use of timers and or level switches.

Just wondered about anyones attempts into this??

MMM sounds interesting sh.

I will be getting my 3 foot tank this week or next and setting thatup.

I think i will get some basic fish for the 2 foot tank and have a test run at Aquaponics to see how it goes, if i end up doing it i will just use the 150 mh i have and i will get a 150w hps globe for the budding.

Off to do some research...

 Haven't tried it yet SH but I intend too.

I've been doing alot of reading on it the last month or two and from what I can figure it has alot of potential in veg stage but may have alot of short falls in bud as it is idealy suited to growing leafy vegetables rather than fruiting ones.

I'm also wondering if using different kinds of fish would give a better or worse outcome, depending on the fish used.
