Hydroponic suppliers targeted

Some Territory hydroponic equipment suppliers are being investigated by

police over their suspected role in the cultivation of drugs.

 

One Darwin supplier has already been summonsed over his alleged role in supplying equipment for growing cannabis.

 

Police are known to be looking at other hydroponic suppliers.

 

"We suspect that there are some hydroponics suppliers involved or assisting in the illicit manufacture of drugs," Drug Squad Senior Sergeant Les Martin said.

 

"I'm not going to name people.

 

"But we suspect there are some suppliers that are well aware their equipment is being used for the manufacture of the drug cannabis.

 

"And on some occasions they may even help in setting them up especially for cannabis."

 

Members of the Drug Enforcement Unit are closely monitoring the hydroponic industry, the Northern Territory News has learned.

 

Experts estimate today's hydroponically-grown marijuana is up to 25 times stronger than naturally-grown crops.

 

Sen-Sgt Martin said police raids now usually uncovered hydroponically grown plants rather than "bush crops".

 

Hydroponic crops are favoured because of their high level of THC, the psychoactive agent which gives users a "high".

 

"Without giving everything away, a lot of our investigations come from information off the streets," Sen-Sgt Martin said.

 

He said the Drug Squad's crackdown on hydroponics was starting to pay off.

 

"Intelligence that we get off the street suggests that the availability of the drug fluctuates," Sen-gst Martin said.

 

"And certainly the amount of work that we've been doing on hydroponic cultivation has reduced the availability of the drug at street level."

 

Sen-Sgt Martin said the Drug Squad is also dedicated to fighting amphetamine production and distribution.

Hydroponics is so popular because it's the most practical way to grow indoors, it wouldn't be anywhere near as popular if it were legal to grow your own, we would only plant one large outdoor crop a year then.

[align=center]I think the police view on hydroponics is fully bullshit. i do horticulture at tafe i own my own completely legit bought hydro setup and i occasionally grow weed in it. the pigs can fuck rite off!
