Which lights to buy?

Recommended Posts

Hey i'm gonna start growing for the first time soon and one of my concerns is light... Is HPS neccisary, or will flouros do the trick? what wattage or voltage should the flouros or HPS lights be? what is the difference between compact and non-compact flouros? i have space limitation.... QUITE a samll place, like a section of a wardrobe, so what would be less dangerous? are all hps lights pricy, or does anyone know where i can get a relatively cheap one in sydney(and if possible a few other growing supplies)?

sorry i don't know anywhere but i moved here about a year ago and i only just started the whole growing thing...

thanks,

crzc

Unless you are in a position where heat will be a major problem, as in a small grow box, go for a HID as it will produce a much higher yield per watt than a fluoro can.

Types of HID used for growing:

Metal Halide - mostly for veg stage.

High Pressure Sodium – mostly for flowering stage.

Horticultural - HPS/MH veg and flower stages (Son-T-Agro, Son-T-Plus, Lucalox, Lucagrow, etc.).

My plants are grown from seedling/clone to harvest under 430w Son-T-Agro HPS/MH horticultural lights.

Hey, let me put it this way:

the growbox will be a cardboard box about 2feet(h)x2feet(l)x(about)1foot(w). This will be for vegitation and maybe a couple clones(oh ya, do i need a seperate room for clones/mother and vegitation?). What do you think i'll need(lights, ventilation, etc) much ventilation, etc?

I'll also have a seperate room for a small ScrOG which will be 1foot(h)x3/4foot(h)x1/2foot(w). Is this too small? and what does andyone think i'll need(lights, ventilation, etc)?

help needed :D , thanks a mill,

from my opinion, using cardboard boxes doesnt sound like a good idea :D :P

...as there's more likely that it will be humid environment inside, and could make the cardboard box weaker as it will absorb all the humidity fro the air inside the cardboard box, plus you are using all these electricity for the lights?

cardboard box + elecitircity + humidity/water = risky environment ..... imo

You are better off using these cheap plywoods or a wardrobe from your local St.Vinne's.

Safety is more important to me first before the plant's yeild/quailty.

How's your fire insurance? :D

I agree with hog, go to Vinnies or the Salvo's and get an old wardrobe for around $10.

Hey chicken, HPS ligths will get you much better and quicker yeild then fluro light/s. You can picked up a second hand 400W HPS at pawn shops everywhere in most cities really cheap, about 50-90 dollars.

The cuboard at salvo's indea is the go, you will get a good one with a key lock for about 20 dollars.

Just a quick note for those with 400w HPS lights, a friend got a conversion lamp for a 400wHPS light to turn it into a 400wMH for veggie growth. One balliste for two lamps, perfect for a cuboard grow.
