backcrossing confusion

Recommended Posts

Backcrossing is crossing the newly grown seed with the parent plant where that seed came from, right? And not with a new strain?

How will backcrossing a plant effect the next generation?

for example, seeds that are backcrossed twice.

why would you do this?

And is backcrossing twice crossing the newly grown seed with each consecutive seeds own parent twice or with its parents parent once (two generations back)

cripes, i could be so far off track, but i'l take a punt.

Hi

Hey frazzle thanks for the intro lol , Hope I can give him something to think about .

What you are calling backcrossing , is called line breeding , you can do it with unrelated stock or related like you are then its inbreeding , you can inbreed very tight like the third generation you talk of no problems but you must really select the most vigorous and high yeilding offspring otherwise you will go down in size quickly , you can bring them back through selection but its not worth the time and effort , the question is why would you want to unless the plant has some special property that you want to lock in on , the only other benefit to inbreed very tight on one great female plant for 3 or 4 generations and then cross the best of that inbreeding with a pure variety male like a Nothern Light or White Rhino , this type of crossing can give some wicked vigor .

I should also add that inbreeding is about selecting for a specific trait or characteristic like potency , aroma , flowering cycle etc high yeild although a charcteristic in a broad sense , yeild is more a result of many plant processes than a yeild trait , if that makes sense , although it is genetic controlled yeild is more a management thing in the real world , like a Ferrari dont go to good on diesel .

Okay, that makes good sense.

What then is backrossing? Is it something else?

backcrossing is simply making seeds, sprouting them and then using those plants to cross back with the parents...the next lot of seeds can then crossed back to the original parents you used and then that process can go on for many generations making a batch of seeds that sprout a high ratio of plants that resemble the original parent :smoke
