NEW YORK — John Lennon fans around the world on Thursday marked — with music, flowers and tearful tributes — the bitter moment 25 years ago when the rock hero was gunned down by a deranged fan.

Lennon followers laid wreaths outside the New York apartment block where the musician was shot dead on Dec 8, 1980.

In the English city of Liverpool, where Lennon was born 65 years ago, more than 1,000 messages to the ex-Beatle, including emails from across the globe, were released on white balloons from the city's Albert Dock.

Yeesh. There has just been no-one like him since.

What are today's celebrities doing? Are there any really extolling peace, freedom, and genuine universal love? Is there anyone who is an icon in popular culture of forward thinking, anti-war, anti-hate? Who, Bono, with his flakey, contrived message of "Save the africans, jesus is great?" He also helped mainstream enlightenment via drug use.

He was a great man, with a powerful message and the means to deliver it. He was the Ghandi of Rock.

He was the Ghandi of Rock.

Now thats carrying it a bit far, personally I think he had a few good songs but he was way out there in la la land with a lot of his stuff. Forget about anything he collabarated with Yoko on. Most of that stuff was shit. And if you know what the words to "imagine" really mean please tell me. Ive had to watch idiots get all weepy and teary eyed over that song for 25 years or so. Give me a break. IMO Bob Dylan had much better stuff.

He was never a prophet of peace, he got all wasted on LSD at one stage in his life and thought he was jesus. He never raised any money for starving orphans in Africa. He got all this publicity because he had a " love in " with Yoko publicy and walked around all the time saying " yeah peace man". Like that stopped any wars .
