I upgraded my lights.

once again congrats on your new lights man

Thanks again buddy - and straight back atcha, 1600 watts of 400hps will give you a nice yield over a single grow-area or 4 reasonable yields if growing in a cupboard.

Anyway - my girls have had their first day under the new lighting, there were 2 VERY visible differences in the plants:

1. Resin production on the WB plants is catching up with the NL, yay!

2. The plants are drinking 2-3 times as much as they were when under the 400's.

The other difference is that the grow-room hit a top of 45 deg sometime today. I checked them at 7pm after arriving home and the temp was sitting comfortably at 31 deg. I'm thinking I'll have to get those 2 fans added to the setup real-quick if I want my plants to continue living when we're out of winter.

You'll definitely have to get some more ventilation happening then, you just can't expect plants to live or thrive under those conditions. They'll be shutting down their stomata at that temp, and stressed like hell. See if you can't get a 150mm centrifugal at least to look after air exchange, or heck, even consider air-conditioning... This is in winter? Geez...

Hi Luke, been awhile since you popped into one of my threads :P

I already have a 150mm in-duct fan extracting air from the room, as well as a standard upright house-fan providing circulation within the room itself.

I'll be adding another 150mm in-duct to increase air extraction, and adding a 100mm intake.

This will probably be done on the weekend when I have some time to spend on the room.

I should also mention - my lights are running during the day, I intend to switch them over to run during the night on the weekend. I think this will make a BIIIG difference.

The 45-degree temp isn't constant - but happens when the shed gets hit with the mid-day sun, which warms the metal causing the internal temprature to go up. For the majority of the light-cycle the plants are actually sitting at about 30-35 deg.

But yeah - I realise I need more ventilation to cool the new lighting. Unfortunately my portable air-con unit died and I can't put it in the box anymore :P

But yeah, thanks for the advice - great minds think alike :B):

Thanks Tom and Pure, I'm really keen on seeing how these guys perform compared to my last grow.

Yeah Skyhigh, it's worrying me too mate  :B):

I've seen my temps skyrocket under the new lights, the canopy-level is still cool enough to be comfortable, however with the current airflow my temps now averaging 37 deg instead of 25 deg.

Now, I'm not panicked because during my last grow which started during the end of summer, my plants tolerated 40+ deg days in the shed, but they drank a shitload more water than these plants that were grown in winter did.

My plan is to get another extraction fan and a Y-connector for ducting and to run it through my carbon filter. I'm also thinking of hooking up a small 100mm fan as an intake in addition to the current passive intakes.

I'm sure my current setup could easily cool a single 600w bulb (it took 2 x 400w's easy), but I'm figuring the extra fan will be needed under both 600w lights.

Forgot to mention, my grow box is 1.59w, 1.01d, 2.15h in metres.

you will probably find that the intake fan , and having some occolating fans in there will make the difference you need to get the room cooler again , if you use two extraction fans with a carbon filter you will get air leakage and it won't work to it's best capabilities , for best results you need the centrifugal fan hooked directly to the carbon filter , not have a big gap where you use a y joint or even some ducting

do the intake first and if you still need it rethink yoru exhaust but I reccon you shoudl be fine provided you get cool air pumped into the room as much as your suckign hot air out

37 degree's in winter is fucking hot , even for 2 x 600's

Hey Pure, thanks for the feedback.

37 deg is hot for 2 x 600's? Heh, my temps would get to 32-33 even under the 2 x 400's, during winter... they would hit above 40 every day back in march - and I still yielded 12oz from the plant B)

But yeah, I'll definately put the 100mm on as an intake, and I do have a centrifugal fan, I'm just not using it currently, I'll have a bash at hooking it up this weekend.

BTW guys, don't stress about it - my plants aren't cooking themselves.. they are drinking double the amount of water they used to but they seem to be fine (so far). In any case, temps will be lower once I switch my light-cycle to run at night and the ambient temprature is around 5-15 deg instead of during the day when it's anywhere from 10-20 deg. You have to remember, my grow-box is inside a metal shed, not inside an insulated house. So the temprature of the outside environment plays a big part.

It's cool, I've got it under control :smoke

Hi Elkel

Congrats on getting urself the new lights. You've got to bite the bullet sometimes & tighten ur purse strings on other things (drugs, booze, partying etc) to save up & put ur money towards a worthwhile cause which will definately pay off 4 u in the end.

It's always exciting getting new stuff 4 the room too hey? ;)

I was excited about using silica 4 the first time the other day.. (;)!)

;) Ohh noo!! Simple things, simple minds hey!? :thumbsup

I only lost my growing virginity recently, so.. uno how it is!? (just quietly agree smiling & slowly back away :P B))

Also, what are u using to measure the temp? Remember that any probe which is black or a normal thermometer will measure adsorbed heat, infrared or whateva it's called.

I changed to a device with a white probe i position under the lights at plant height. This gives an accurate temp of 27c where the black probe one i had read about 35!

Goodluck with it all :P

Regards, Claudia.

P.s: What does Elkel mean?

Hi Claudia, welcome to OzStoners!

(I've been reading your posts, but haven't welcomed you yet heh ;) )

Yeah, I actually bit the bullet and used the money I was saving for bubble-bags to buy these lights. It's ok though, another month or so and I can afford my bags to make hash from my current grow ;)

Yeah, I love getting new "toys" from the Hydro store, I always curse myself for not bringing more money every time I'm in there :whistling

I've never used silica before personally - It's supposed to increase plants immune-system and resistance to pests while helping them grow strong isn't it?

I also thought I'd heard it can be carcinogenic in high levels?

I lost my growing virginity back in Feburary of this year, I just wish I'd done it earlier and discovered what growing was like when I was younger - ahh well, guess I was just "saving" myself for that special plant ::P:

My thermometor is a mercury-based one that is pale-beige in colour, it doesn't absorb a hell offa lot of head but it is around bulb-level in the room, so I expect the temps it reads are off by a few degrees too high. I like it because it always records the max and min temps until it is reset - good for when you get home during the evening and things have cooled down, you can see what temps were like in peak-sun.

Goodluck with it all  ;)

Regards, Claudia.

Thanks very much, good luck to yourself as well, I hope you invest in a digi-cam and start a grow-diary for all of us pot-perves to watch your ladies ;)

BTW, it's actually "Eikel", I typed the "i" with caps when I registered and everyone thinks my name is "ELkel".

Eikel means dickhead in dutch. ;)
