Author:By SETH FREEDLAND Date: Sunday, February 05, 2006 source: Source City Council votes to require pot cultivation be indoors The Ukiah City Council's ongoing modification of its marijuana cultivation ordinance took another divergent leap Wednesday, when the council voted to require that all cultivation take place indoors. The council members chose to focus on the public safety and quality of life concerns neighbors of pot-growing Ukiahans have delivered to city staff. After four months of administering the ordinance, various issues, including odor and air quality complaints, and an increase in acts of violence and intimidation, led the city to move all med…

Cannabis almost doubles the risk of fatal car crashes, according to a new study, though smoking the drug is still far less risky than drink-driving, the researchers say. Stoned drivers were almost twice as likely to be involved in a fatal car crashes than abstemious drivers, according to a study of 10,748 fatal car crashes in France between 2001 and 2003. More than half of the drivers in the study themselves died as a result of their accidents and all the subjects were tested for drug and alcohol use after crashing. Even after accounting for factors such as the age of the drivers and the condition of the vehicle, the researchers conclude that cannabis caused a signifi…

Will locals vote to put pot-related enforcement at the bottom of the cops' to-do list? The city of Santa Cruz sure does love its dope. At least that's the assumption Santa Cruz Citizens for Sensible Marijuana Policy are banking on as they work to get an initiative on November's ballot that would make marijuana-related crimes the lowest enforcement priority for Santa Cruz police. "I don't think that responsible adults should be punished for recreational use. And the vast majority of citizens in this city seem to feel the same way," said initiative proponent Craig Reinarman. The initiative follows over a decade's worth of pro-marijuana legislation in the city of Santa…

Regular cannabis use can have "real and significant" mental health effects but is unlikely to cause schizophrenia, according to a report from Government drugs advisers published yesterday. The drug can impair psychological and psychomotor performance, cause acute intoxication reactions and lead to relapses of individuals with mental illnesses. Charles Clarke Charles Clarke proposes to keep cannabis as a Class C drug But the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs said that on current evidence smoking cannabis was likely to increase the chances of developing schizophrenia by just one per cent. The council, which was asked to reconsider the Government's decision to …

Marijuana growers have gathered in Europe's pot-smoking capital for a trade show that is taking on the trappings of a major industry fair, complete with scantily clad models, glossy brochures and, of course, samples. But instead of posing next to muscle cars, the models explained the intricacies of hydroponics culture such as the "iGrow-box Intensive Irrigation System" and exhibitors showed off their bongs, grinders, rolling paper, reflective film, hemp-fabric apparel and how-to marijuana growing videos. "This gives you an uplifting high, up in the mind, not in your body," marijuana cultivator Arjan Roskam said of his latest Cannabis Cup-winning strain, Arjan's Haze #…

AN international research team believes it has discovered how marijuana alleviates the pain and debilitating symptoms of diseases such as multiple sclerosis. The researchers claim the finding, reported today in the journal Neuron, promises new therapies to reduce pain and damage to brain cells. MS is a chronic and progressive disease in which the protective sheaths surrounding nerves in the brain and spinal cord are damaged, leading to problems with movement and speech. The German and US researchers found marijuana acts as a "gatekeeper", suppressing the biochemical reactions that cause pain and nerve damage. The new findings fit neatly with a large British study …

12/31/2005 Court Rules It Is Legal To Smoke Pot Seeds State Law Says Nothing Of Possessing Seeds Portland, Ore. -- The Oregon Court of Appeals has ruled that smoking marijuana seeds is legal under state law. The case stems from the 2002 arrest of 27-year-old Pendleton resident Cameron Beers. He was arrested for driving under the influence and possession of less than one ounce of marijuana. In his defense, Beers' lawyers argued that he should never have been convicted because he only had marijuana seeds on him. State law only prohibits possession of leaves, stems and flowers. The Court of Appeals considered whether legislators might have omitted seeds ina…

Cannabis smoke is not as carcinogenic as tobacco smoke. In a review article published today in Harm Reduction Journal, Dr. Melamede from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, USA, writes that although cannabis smoke and tobacco smoke are chemically very similar, evidence suggests that their effects are very different and that cannabis smoke is less carcinogenic than tobacco smoke. The pharmacological effects of tobacco and cannabis smoke differ in many ways, mainly because tobacco smoke contains nicotine while cannabis smoke contains tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The cancer-promoting effects of smoke are increased by nicotine, while they are reduced by THC. Toba…
