MELBOURNE drug barons are making more than $1 million a week from illicit cannabis plantations hidden in suburban homes. Police have identified several major organised syndicates operating up to 40 so-called crop houses at one time. And two murders have been linked to the burgeoning illicit trade after cannabis and hydroponic production equipment were found at the scenes of both. A Sunday Herald Sun investigation also found: DRUG syndicates can produce a staggering $5 million worth of cannabis in a single production cycle of six to 10 weeks by using sophisticated networks of crop houses. THE lucrative facilities are flourishing in Melbourne's western suburbs…

NT jockey Phillip Johnson has been banned for five years after he tested positive to drugs and threatened a steward with a telephone. Johnson claimed he smoked dope because he was in pain following a haemorrhoid operation. On Tuesday he was handed a five-year disqualification for misconduct and a two-year suspension for testing positive to cannabis. It was his fourth positive cannabis test. On the last occasion in 2001, the winner of the 1992 Alice Springs Cup on True Tales claimed unwittingly eating carrot cake laced with marijuana had been the reason for his elevated cannabis level. The latest swab on Johnson was taken on September 6 and he was advised by…

A POLICE drug squad sergeant yesterday admitted dealing drugs. Guilty plea: Malcolm Rosenes. Suspended detective Malcolm Rosenes used a police informer to buy 10kg of hashish from the father of slain gangster Jason Moran and two ecstasy tablets linked to accused crime boss Tony Mokbel, a court heard. The County Court was told Rosenes was on sick leave when arrested after receiving $50,000 to buy more than 15,000 ecstasy tablets from an Israeli crime syndicate. Rosenes, 50, pleaded guilty to trafficking in a commercial quantity of ecstasy, two counts of conspiring to traffic in cocaine and one count each of trafficking in cocaine, cannabis resin and ecstasy and …

A five-year-old Territory girl shocked teachers when she showed her class how to make a bong out of a Coke bottle during a ``show and tell'' session. The incident took place at a primary school in Darwin's northern suburbs. The revelation comes amid mounting concerns over drug use among Territory primary school students. At least two instances have been reported to the Education Department of children aged between five and 12 being caught with drugs at school. In one case the drug was amphetamine. Teachers have indicated this may be the tip of the iceberg. ``The little girl showing how to make a bong was the most in-your-face example of drug culture among pr…

A candidate for the Katherine by-election has spent time in jail on a drug charge. Markus Bader, 39, told the Sunday Territorian he spent six days in remand at Berrimah jail after being arrested while driving with more than 17kg of cannabis stashed in a 44-gallon drum. The independent candidate also said he had faced at least two assault charges, including one count of assaulting police and at least one Apprehended Violence Order. He was also convicted and fined $500 on the unusual charge of Failure to Cease to Loiter when he was arrested after a mass brawl in Mataranka. The largest known marijuana plant grown in the Territory has been seized by police. The tree, 2.5m high and 2.5m wide, was found in a hydroponic set-up in a locked bedroom of a home at Anula in Darwin. Drug Squad Superintendent Kris Evans said the tree was so big it took up an entire room. The plant had been specially pruned and ``terraced'' along a series of wires to maximise its growth potential. Supt Evans said while it was common to come across marijuana plants strung up so they did not snap under their own weight, he had never come across such a plant before. Supt Evans said he had heard of the technique being used in southern states. But he would no…

Well things have been progressing extremely slowly. First I'll reintenerate what's been said: The Cup's on the 8th November. Enteries must be in by the end of October. It's open anyone pro-canna. 18 years old. No grog. $40 ticket (to pay for food, fizz drink). Else? Oh it was to be in Redfern but has been moved maybe to Marickville. The mull is put on, but you might find it hard to buy any. The problems are: We don't have a p.o. box to send the entries too. If you want to place an entery send me a priv-msg and I'll pass it on. How can we stop the fun-police for fucking it over (my major worry)? Last year I beleive it was mostly word of mouth, much better. So send me a …

SEVERAL students have been suspended from a suburban Adelaide primary school for possessing cannabis. Colonel Light Gardens Primary School yesterday confirmed a group of students ? believed to be three ? had been banned for taking the drug to school. It is understood the older students had smoked cannabis in a park near the school outside school hours. However, other students at the school allegedly told the Education Department the offending students had offered them the drug. A department spokesman said it was department policy not to disclose details of the students involved. It is unclear whether the students are now back in class. Principal Raelene Taggar…
