In 1996, voters in California approved a referendum that made it legal for the first time in decades in the US for people to consume cannabis for medicinal purposes. More than a dozen states have followed suit since and several others - the most recent of which is Massachusetts - have approved laws decriminalising the possession of small amounts of the drug. Now, there are moves afoot in California to go further to fully legalise marijuana. Evidence of the impact that the approval of medicinal marijuana has had on some areas of California is clear in Oakland. Across the bay from San Francisco, it has come to be known as Oaksterdam, in a nod to the symbolic global …

Cannabis Has Always Played an Important Role in Religion I read Jacob Sullum's article 'Can Smoking Marijuana be Considered a Religion?!' with some interest, as I myself currently have a case against the Canadian Government in response to their refusal to grant me an exemption for my own spiritual use of cannabis. As well, the historical role of the religious use of cannabis has been a subject I have personally researched for 20 years, having written 3 books on the subject, Green Gold the Tree of Life: Marijuana in Magic and Religion (1995); Sex, Drugs, Violence and the Bible (2001); and the forthcoming Cannabis and the Soma Solution (2010); as well as dozens of publish…

Found this little piece on the interweb thing Why the unlikeliest of states—ours—should legalize marijuana. by William Martin/ http://www.texasmonthly.com IN THE EARLY YEARS of the twentieth century, as they poured across the border into Texas, Mexican immigrants brought with them a familiar and cheap intoxicant: cannabis, which they called marihuana (in those days, it was spelled with an h instead of a j). Perhaps because they were young, predominantly male, and away from home—strong correlates of troublesome behavior—they were seen as lacking appropriate inhibition, especially when they came to town on weekends. Cerveza may have been more culpable, but cannabis made…

museummouse Cannabisculture Internationally known cannabis activist and businessman Marc Emery turned himself over to the British Columbia Provincial courts today waiting extradition to the US for pleading guilty to conspiracy to manufacture cannabis. Marc will be serving a five year sentence in a deal struck with the DEA which also had co-defendants Micheal Rainey and Greg Williams receive 5 years probation but no jail time. The Canadian Justice Minister Rob Nicholson has yet to sign the extradition order and supporters are hoping that he refuses but that is unlikely since Canada has never refused to sign an order for the US. http://i577.photobucket.com/albums/ss213/muse…

By HEATHER RIVERS, SUN MEDIA Sat, September 26, 2009 http://lfpress.ca/newsstand/News/Local/200...128741-sun.html Copyright © 2008, Canoe Inc WOODSTOCK -- It may look and smell just like marijuana, but there's a good chance it's not. Police say several hemp plants stolen from a Stratford-area research plot have been recovered in Woodstock. Gordon Scheifele, a plant breeder and retired University of Guelph researcher, said thieves this week raided his legal 0.8 hectare (two-acre) plot licensed by Health Canada. Although it was labelled hemp, Scheifele, a former president of the Ontario Hemp Alliance, said thieves still stole about half a garbage bag of hemp …

(AP) – 4 hours ago http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/articl...NmWYEAD9APR9S00 Copyright © 2009 The Associated Press THESSALONIKI, Greece — A man has been arrested in northern Greece for allegedly growing marijuana in the median strip of the country's main, um, highway. The pot plants weren't little seedlings, either, nor were they well-concealed. Police say the 35-year-old was caught Thursday in the middle of a six-lane highway linking Athens with Thessaloniki, harvesting 42 marijuana plants up to 5.9 feet (1.8 meters) tall. A small quantity of dried pot was found in his home, as well. Police said the marijuana had been planted in a 1-meter-wide wide median …

Drug bus will swoop 'anytime, anywhere' http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,26098774-29277,00.html TWO new drug buses will hit NSW roads next month as part of a blitz aimed at high-risk parolees. The buses will be used to conduct 30,000 random urine tests across the state each year, randomly turning up at workplaces, parolees' homes or parole offices to make sure offenders are meeting the conditions of their release. Each bus will be staffed by a team of 10 Corrective Services officers, who will test up to 40 high-risk offenders each day for drug or alcohol use. The initiative will boost testing capacity tenfold, with just 3000 tests undertaken last year…

REBEKAH CAVANAGH August 14th, 2009 http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2009/08/1...261_ntnews.html POLICE say drug dealers are continuing to exploit residents in remote Territory communities by charging them up to $100 for a bag of cannabis no bigger than the size of a 10 cent coin. Superintendent Helen Braam said it is just another example of the ongoing exploitation of remote Territorians. "The alternative for a remote community family is spending $100 on letting their kids go to the show, buying them a new bike for their birthday or sending them on a school excursion - something most urban kids take for granted, and whose parents are not being extorted becau…

http://www.altmedia.net.au/the-global-tide...-on-drugs/10869 Author: Michael Gormly Posted: Thursday, 3 September 2009 OPINION Except for the occasional glimmer of light, consumers of Australian media can be forgiven for thinking the dark age of drug prohibition is not only justified but securely incumbent. While our media, most politicians and even some health experts continue to regurgitate an evolving panoply of drug myths usually traceable to ultra-conservative US elements, truth will out and the international tide is on the turn against prohibition. One of these myths is the one about cannabis and psychosis. New strains of ‘skunk’ are X times strong…
