Can this be done???

Recommended Posts

OK this is the story i have 2 150w ballests that can run a 150w HPS or Mh globes (i rang the companey that make them as i wasent sure about them and thay told me that i can run both HPS and Mh in them) i did a bit of ringing around to get pricers on globes for the HPS globe started from $45-$59 witch i dident think was to bad but it when come to priceing a 150w MH the price started at $65 :thumbdown witch was a spin out because i through thay would be around the same price but started to get getting up in price why this is i havent got a clue or was just ringing the wrong placers :scratchin .

So here is my question for the people in the know on this type of thing could i run a 175w MH globe in a 150w ballest, i know u cant run a smaller globe in a bigger ballest but running a slitly larger wattage glabe on a in a smaller wattage ballest work as we are only talking a 25w diffrence between the globe and ballest so will a 175w NH globe run in a 150w balest, i know the globe wont run at its full strengh but it wouldent be far from it and if it can be don may be the glabe mite last a little bit longer.

All throughs and advice on this would be great...

i dont know much about that kind of lighting but from my experience with electrical things etc.. I can say that if the ballast is lower wattage than the bulb then the only thing that will happen is that the bulb will not run at its optimum output, if anything it is likely to increase the life of the bulb. Problems only start to occur when the ballast is higher wattage than the bulb, in this case the bulb would blow or burn out within a few weeks. You should have no problem but im not entirely sure so if i were you id wait for someone elses opinion, just to make sure as id hate for you to waste money and growing time. :smoke

i dont think it would be any good, if the ballast is outputing 150w and the bulb is looking for 175w, the buld will not out put its correct light, so it may even be worse than a 150W light in terms of lumens and spectrum,

personaly id look at geting rid of the gear and getting a 400w sonT or something similar.

it pays to shop around for bulbs i found a lighting store oposite my hydro shop with bulbs fully half the price.

if you've only got one grow area just use the 400w for veg and flower(bud) you'll get much better results, the power difference is negligable

I am setting up 2 grow chambers, one for flower and one for veg, i want to have a setup were i can start seeds off and do cloneing and veging until ready to turn to bud, as i all ready have the 150w ballest all i have to is get the globe then thay way wile one lot is in flowering under the 400w the next lot will be will be under the 150w waiting to go into the flower grow room.

i dont know if the results of using the 150w for veg will be great, if you take clones at the start of 12/12, you'll have at least 6+ weeks to veg the cutting, so you will get some vegetative growth, but to make a bushy veg plant with a short internodal length witholy a 150w may be a challenge, also the 150w may be overkill for the first week or 2 of a cuttings life
