technically yes you want to swap old air for fresh air.. I have grown in rooms without any extra ventilation in winter no probs but i wasn't that worried about smell..

If you are using the room and need to filter the smell you will need a carbon filter and inline fan. Use the fan to suck air through the filter and blow out of the the room. The filter and fan must be big enough to filter all the air in the room every few minutes and the smell will be totally absorbed in the filter before its exhausted outside.. You also need to vent new air in so yeah, that means holes in something.

In the tent you just vent your filtered air out into the main room and get passive air intake from vents at the bottom of the tent or blow fresh air in with another inline fan..  This can work in the middle of winter but if the room get too hot you may need to cool it down so the tent can get cooler air in.   Old  $100 portable A/C on ebay is what i will be using just to keep the the main room cooler if i need too. The room i have is a seriously hot room but it depends how cool your room is in winter..

the area I live in gets really cold in winter and if I leave the door to the room shut it gets very cold in there, im not overly concerned about smell as I live alone and rarely get visitors, but on the other hand I don't really want my house reeking of fresh bud, is there anything u can do about odor control and ventilation without having to put holes in the wall ?

You really don't want to be circulating air around and around in the room/grow area. There are a few basics you need for a successful grow and one of those is sufficient air exchange. Recirculating the air in the room will make the temperature hard to control and not having enough fresh air will affect how the plants grow.

You may be able to use your window for air intake with some modification. I wouldn't use the window for intake and exhaust. If you are worried about modifying your ceiling with some thought you should be able to do it in a way that makes it simple to repair. The small cost of repairs if you ever decide to return the room to it's original state will be minimal compared to the money you save growing your own.

If you setup your area with this in mind it will be very easy to grow some healthy plants.

Just curious though as to how big a filter and fan would be needed as this is a large room.

Just my opinion but in a tent roughly half the size of the room would be much simpler and more efficient as you don't need to make any holes in walls or ceiling, you would require a smaller filter and fans that would be much more efficient. Your lighting would be twice as effective. Stealth and security would be much better probably much quieter..  The lung room would be cooler and give you the freedom to leave doors or windows open at times not to mention cleaner. The list goes on

In the middle of winter you should be able to control temps.. Either way the formular is the same. Old warm air out fresh cool air in
