If the ballast is digital, it is possible to run a 1000w, 600w and 400w all on the one ballast providing it is a 1000w ballast.

 

Provided it has a switch to select the appropriate wattage

Some digital ballasts automatically sense the globe wattage and have no physical switch.

 

The OP should clarify what type of ballast he has before mucking around any further imo.

You could be right on that! But concerned now, it might not be a switchable ballast at all. As I said, bought the whole thing as a package deal - tent, lights, ballast, fan from hollandhydroponics on eBay.

Just a bump on this, I definitely need a 600w ballast don't i? Just put the HPS light in because it's not working too well trying to get to the room to fire the lamp up at the right time, was 3 hours late yesterday. And on that note, I'm pretty sure they won't go into flower if the light is off for a couple of hours longer than it should be if they need a certain level of dark to be triggering flowering, but 18 hours one day, 15 another, 16.5 the next, back to 15.5 for example, won't be exactly good for them will it? Plugging the right light in and I'm getting next to no hum coming from the ballast now either.

It seems to me you have a 1000W ballast that is switchable between MH and HPS. You do need to use the correct globe with the correct ballast.

Yep, going to sort that out this week, don't really want to be running the extra power for too long unnecessarily. I must say I've very impressed with how well indoor growing works so fast, all the plants are growing so fast, dounless the rate (more really) of the couple I've got outdoors. Have tried to upload a couple of pics (numerous times) but it's just not working.

It's not a problem of not knowing how to upload pics, I've done it in the past, it just hangs there uploading doing nothing for ages - 10 minutes or more. Have also tried the basic uploader and still doing the same. Very frustrating, they are great looking plants!

I was trying to post from my phone, because the website runs really sluggishly on the PC and had issues actually being able to post anything at all from the PC.  At the time posting pics from the phone worked.  Weird.  Anyway, here it is I hope.

And so much for sorting the ballast out, think people know its happening so they are outside for the summer now, assuming they don't just go straight to flower with so much less daylight hours.
