18/6, that is where I start. Some growers prefer to veg with their lights running 24/0 others go for 18/6, it's a personal preference thing.

The best method I have found is to keep an eye on them after changing to the flowering cycle (12/12) they are usually showing their sex by the time they are two weeks into the cycle, starting with clones is the best way as you know that they are all females.

Enviromental stress is the easiest way to change a female plant into a male or hermie. Usually a light regime of two hours on and two hours off has the desired effect, some use one on and one off with the same outcome

 

If the flowers appear at the end of the flowering cycle and produce pollen they can be used to pollenate younger, fertile, female flowers, the resulting seeds should be female

 

Male flowers that appear earlier in the flowering cycle can be used to pollinate other female clones that have been started in the flowering process a couple of weeks earlier. A single male flower can release hundreds of thousands of pollen grains that float in the air and are attracted to the female flowers pistils.
