-The Collective Coco Growers Thread-

Recommended Posts

Here is a must read for any coco enthusiast - http://www.manicbotanix.com/hydroponic-grow-guide/coco-growing.html

Loads of useful information about picking nutrients, buffering\reusing coco, making your own coco, ph ranges and all that jazz.

If you could only read 1 article about coco this would be my choice.

integral hydroponics is the book that got me started way back last decade...

thanks for the link, great read!

I've grown in coco from the instant I went indoors.  It has always performed extremely well for me when dialed in and been super easy about it too.  For years I didn't have an EC meter and got away with using ph drops by just following the directions on the nutrient bottles which was 2mL a+b to 1L of water for small plants and then 4mL a+b to 1L of water for larger plants.  I'd use pk13/14 late in flowering and that was it.  It really was dead simple and crazy easy to take care of as like billo I fed once a week and just gave ph'd water every 2-3 days.  I also flushed fortnightly or if they showed any symptoms that a flush would fix.

These days I've added beneficial bacteria, silica, a calcium/magnesium supplement and a product called cargoboost which is meant to help nutrient uptake, add carbohydrates, etc. which should also give the benes a boost too.  Due to not flushing my perlite properly and having shit water the ph rises after watering the plants so instead of watering at 5.8ph like normal its closer to 5.5 so the rise in ph brings it back up to 5.8ph.  I'm feeding them weekly with a+b and cargoboost and adding the cal/mag supplement to the feed fortnightly after giving the plants a flush.  The beneficial bacteria was soaked into the coco after the plants were established and they loved it.  The growth was much lusher, they perked up heaps and the gnat population suffered a serious decline.  I still see some from time to time but its only a few here and there.  I honestly see more inside my house which is plant free than I do down in my tents.  I've since flushed my coco/perlite and then given it a big dose of the beneficial bacteria before using it and it is really helping especially with my cuttings as I'm using the same coco/perlite I grow in to root the cuttings.  The root systems look much fluffier, whiter and healthier in general while coming on extremely fast.

To make things look a bit neater this is my exact way of growing

Expand coco and mix with perlite (65% coco 35% perlite)

Flush coco and perlite with 5x volume of the pots they're in

Dose with mycoapplymaxx (beneficial bacteria)

Put medium in 100mL pot, make hole and put rooting gel in it

Dip cutting in rooting gel and put it in a pot

Feed Nutrifield coco A+B 2mL, cal/mag 1.5mL, silica 1.5mL and cargoboost 1.5mL to 1.5L of water.

EC should read 1.6, ph too high to measure

Add 1mL of ph down and gradually lower it down to 5.5ph

Soak pots until I get 10% plus runoff

Mist cuttings 2-3 times a day in first week then once a day until rooted

Water with plain ph'd water as needed until cuttings are rooted.

Transplant rooted cuttings into 500mL pots

Feed with Nutrifield coco A+B 3mL, 1.5mL cargoboost and a drop of ph down to 1.5L water

Water should test at 1.4EC and 5.5ph, if not adjust as needed

After that I've been raising the feed by 0.5-1mL per week which knocks the EC up about 0.3-0.6 points and just watering with ph'd water as needed.  I could go a bit higher with some of them but others are looking well fed so its a nice middle ground for me to stick to.  I transplant them into 4L pots a week after going into the 500mL pots and give the plants two weeks more vege before being transplanted again and put into flowering.  I also flush fortnightly and give the plants some cal/mag and silica with their feed to give them the best restart I can.

I give the plants a 10-14 day flush depending on how they take it.  I'll start by giving the pots about 5x their volume in water to clear them out and just give them ph'd water as needed until I chop them down.

That's it.  Making cookies is harder than growing in coco lol

I love coco. It's a duck's nuts. lol

Love a 60/40 coco/perlite mix personally. Best of both worlds.

I've been doing a lot of reading up on coco lately. Gotta be the best medium out there IMO.

Yep , im still fairly new to coco but iv had nothing but success and wouldnt use anything else . Has anyone found much difference in nutrient brands ? Iv been using house and garden a+b only

Gday

I'm interested in using coco but I noticed there doesn't seem to be specific coco flowering nutrients.

Reading an article someone posted, it really seemed to stress the importance of using coco specific nutrients.

Do you just use the one set of nutrients the whole way? (eg. if you got the Canna brand - the Canna Coco A+B)

Some examples of what people use for flowering in coco would be good - not some huge list, just basic learner stuff.

Thanks
