looking at the water in one of those holes you dug, that clay would benefit big time from a healthy dose of gypsum. (or clay-breaker as it's called.) ...(you can do a little test yourself if you're keen - search 'gypsum response test' you could easily do it on site)

 

I'd apply around 200gms to a hole and water it in before filling with whatever mix your using.

 

and break up the sides of the hole too once you've dug it out. I've heard the smooth surface spades leave on heavy clay like can make it hard for roots to penetrate.

Hey Kkushmanabout the clay breaking, although Your already off and away you can still treat the clay soil with humic acid. Humic acid acts by pushing apart the layers of clay and changing the structure of the soil making it more crumbly/powdery instead of dense and inpenetrable would certainly help your roots get deeper and further ,give humic acid a Google.
