Recommended Posts

ffs i was typing my reply for 10mins on my phone and the phone stuffed up haha. hash that makes perfect sense i was sure combustion heaters used wood but i got confused. im one of those culprits wholl use wet or dry wood since i cant store a winters supply of wood for a yr. parents wouldnt b to happy. just go across to the park grab pine, gum tree and whatever else wood. the only time i notice smoke is when the fires not roaring and the woods arent in the centre of the flame. i just use smaller portions of wood to make sure it burns properly. itic now youve got me interested in reaserching turpentine and its effects haha. firefighters have big balls uve got that right haha. i dnt trust the nmedia hence i thought u guys would b able to give me some gd answers. haha itic ancient civilisations sometimes acted like primitive ppl but at the same time i wonder how they had such great knowledge about how to build pyramids, had knowlegde of what the human dna structure looked like etc. magpie that looks sick haha. im a paranoid freak when it comes to health unfortaunetly haha. its the beat when it hits the middle pic, red and warm. bentato i know but since are life expectancy has increased those little things catch up to you like maybe breathing in ash to kill you. who knows one thing i do know is suffocating to death slowly over months isnt something id look forward to. anyways thanks alot guys

lol mate, you dont have to store it.... thats what a good wood guy does. He cuts it down, leaves it for a year to dry, then sells it.

I buy my wood, don't like chainsaws and being stoned.. and I'm not gonna stop smoking.... lol

If your in the east you want ironbark or any other dense hardwood, stay away from pines, gums etc, and your flue will love you for it, as will the enviroment.

If you got a gas line to your house , try a gas fire, they look sweet like a woodfire, but more economical.

peace. Nibbler.

We have a slow combustion and I'm in love with it! Heats the entire house up in minutes and it stays warm all night into the morning!

I agree with Nibbler, its just easier to buy the fire wood! Comes in heaps of different varieties depending on what your looking for from the burn. They drop if off at the house and you just have to stack it up.

In the middle of winter ours is on 24/7 and we go through tonnes of wood lol but I rate it over an air con heater any day!

haha being a uni student and having no job i have to improvise but for the time being looking for wood and cutting it with a hand saw is fun and a good work out to haha. my friend lives on a farm and they cut down dead trees so if we can scout some iron bark will try to get my hands on it. haha tell me about it a bin worth full of wood burnt in 4hrs. weve got a gas heater sitting 1m away from the chimney haha

My old house in Vic was over 100 years old. A "Victorian" had an open fire place in all rooms. Yes even the bedrooms. The one I am in now has a slow combustion wood heater.

Getting the wood was part of the fun. Old mate his wife, my wife, picnic lunch hit the road find the fallen timber, out with the chainsaw and axe fill up the van, lunch, scoobs and a great drive home.

If the chimmeny is kept clean then no or very minimal smoke would come into the room at start up.

The key is the wood, like stated before dry not wet. Box gum, tallow and a few others are the best for fires. Give off plenty of heat and last for hours. Old railway sleepers are good also but burn away very quickly.

Now I just go into my back yard and cut up any trees that have fallen over or dead branches that have been shed by the trees.

No gas here so electric heating is out of the question. Too expensive.

Open fires are great, soothing and usually have all the family sitting together.

Very romantic as well, if the kids aren't home.

I know I'd kill for one right now, wooden floorboards are so cold it hurts and the reverse cycle is pretty shithouse compared to the memories of sitting infront of a roaring fire

Get a bucket of real hot water go outside and throw it over all the finned part of your a/c. Reverse cycle a/c's have to extract heat from the surrounding air outside. Once the ouside temps start to get into single digits the efficiency drops off dramatically. Only the fins though. Not the panels.
