Questions about a new recirc setup

Recommended Posts

My thinking was that with pumps running 24/7 the water dripping out of the baskets back into the res would aerate the water, providing oxygen to the water. From the research I have done I thought if the water had enough oxygen in it then it didnt matter if the roots were constantly wet? By running water only 15 mins in every hour I'd need to add an air pump and stone, do you think?

How come you got root rot this time if the last 5 - 6 time of 24/7 water had no probs?

hey mate i had 2 air stones in res not sure why i ended up with root rot this time iv had plenty of good diarys running my pump 24/7 . i asked the hydro shop bloke and he said different strains different place where im growing ect.

Youll defn need a recirc medium to dry out a bit, too wet and you can get fungus gnats.

The set up looks great. If its second hand you wont regrete making up a big batch of H2O2 and spray and scrub every area of that. She does look a bit grimey.

Otherwise. Looks like you got a serious looking garden there

Edit, tho I was having another look at the set up...

with all those hoses could you set up an air pump to contantly airate a DWC type set up. feed air into the water while ou pump water in from the rez.

Youll need to put a lid on the water somehow as the roots will be dangling in them and they preffer the dark.

Was your mate using this as a recirc? or a Recirculating DWC?

Was your mate using this as a recirc? or a Recirculating DWC?

I don't really know iTiC, he knows less than I do about growing and this set up. When I ask him he didnt know what recirculated or DWC meant. All he could tell me was he used it set up just like i've got it (i'm not sure how it could be set up any different, other than raising the frame and baskets higher from the res) and he ran the water pump 24 hrs a day. He remembered using 18 hrs of light for veg and 12 hrs for flower but that was it. He only used it for 2 cycles about seven years ago. He gave me the nutes he had left over, they are a different brand and look about 7 years old, but the feeding strengths on the label are pretty similar to the ones ive been using with coco and the ones brought to run with this.

He did say that the roots filled up the main res underneath both times he ran it though. Given this is always full, am I correct in concluding that was DWC?

If the pump runs 24/7, and the water is well oxyginated then its effectively a DWC.

The airstone in the REZ, contantly washing over a medium ...

Im still a bit curious about running a WATER pump 24/7, A DWC recirc is the only thing I know that could get away with running 24/7. The air stone should be running all the time.

A recic feeding is usually 15 min avery 3/4 hours. Some Media dont like getting too wet. Cocco attract mights, and Perlite can get fungas knags, dunno about Hydroton.

If I were In your shoes Id run it just as your mate did and make your ajusment sfrom there, GL and Im keen to see what you do with this.

1. Yeah well judging by how the system was ran before, root submerged in the res and that constantly cycling over them. I thought it sounded like a recirculating DWC set up.

2. Thats the trick, there isnt an airstone in the setup. I figured i was either gunna run the feed schedule you mentioned in 3. and buy an airstone to put in the tank, or

4. Just run it how my mate did, then make adjustments after each cycle. I think thats what I'll do for now

Thanks for all your advice and help man. Its always good to get some fresh thoughts
