pipeman is that roof insulation your talking about? i was thinking when i need my new fan (150mm inline) i was ganna buy a cheap storage box from bunnings cut one 150mm hole in each end place the fan in there and pack really hard with roofing insulation but would there be any chance that this fan would run any more than 60c in summer? Buddy, which fans from Buinnings move 800m3 an hour for $95? I was at bunnings yesterday and fans that moved 250m3 or thereabouts were over a $100 and fans that moved about 400 were over $200.

Gazza, rockwool is generally not used for ceiling insultation as its too expensive. Also ceiling insulation is selected more for thermal properties while rockwool is mainly used for its sound proofing properties. but for what we're talking about probably any insulation would be good enough. I wouldn't bother wasting money on a box. Just wrapping insulation around and sealing outside with plastic and duct tape should be good enough. If ya wanna get it really soundproof wrap the fan, then place it in a box with an air gap between insulation and walls of box then wrap outside of box in insulation again. Air gaps are your friend when you're trying to soundproof.

With your last question are you asking if your fan will overheat? I don't think so, as the internal air flow is the cooling mechanism so the fan shouldn't need ventilation/cooling around its outside.

The fan im using is designed for continous use, I dont have a bath fan. I also do have air ducting as well its the special kind with small holes all throughout it so that it lets out air better making it cooler inside, I still find that the fan makes to much noise though more so now where it sounds seem to regulate and become louder for periods of time. Its also only my 3rd grow so I dont think they fan should be cactus already. I guess I dont have many options really, its just I have a very small apartment so the noise can really become a factor sometimes. o wellz

how have you mouted the fan?

my suggestion is not to use those little arm things, just use the holes around the fan and screw this down on top of your wardrobe or box. But between the fan and the box put some rubberised foam or something that will absorb the vibrations from the fan.

oh and put silicon on your screws- sounds weird but it works.

Great advice with the silicone Ferengi. It works in silencing anything with vibration.

I have used it on vent duct before and it works well there. Ducts will sometimes amplify vibration sound like a drum, I ran a large bead of silicone on two sides of the duct all along the length. Really made a noticeable difference. The extra mass and flexibility changes and dampens the harmonic vibrations.

Best

haha yeah...you know this is interesting stuff. myself, ive never bought a fan worth more than $30. i dont and never have had problems with noise as ive always had a large shed or grown indoors where the noise can be compensated or kept out of ppl`s hearing...building a quick setup up the road later today, fans will be necessary due to location etc. noise will be an issue for the ppl concerned.

this might sound stupid, but what do youse mean by a coaxial fan and a centrifugal fan? means nothing to me...just curious.

heres my new 150mm inline fan just brought it today for $95 from simple grow in sydney at first i thought i got ripped off it didnt come with a plug and it wasnt the 90 liters per second on the box it says 68 liters per second and 30 watts on the fan it says 35 watts im lost :P this fan has double set of blades! this should be very useful ;) u might be able to see two sets of 5 blades they are off set slightly it pumps out about 3 times more air than my 120mm fans ( thats just feeling it by hand) does anyone else use one of these double ended bladed fans?
