seed germination

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Im growing again for the first time in ten years, so Im alittle rusty lol and am doing outdoor instead of hydro so it could be interesting. I always sprouted my seeds in water, but these ones may be too old cos they have just all sunk. I read somewhere to plant them as soon as they do or they will drown lol Have never tried the wet paper towel method either. Anyone have any suggestions??

I usally put them into water, if they havent sunk within 24hrs I just lightly touch them with a tooth pick and then the floaters usally sink, if not its the bin. Then I take them out (sunken ones) and throw them in moist coco (coco grower here) and let them do their thing. Sometime they have split and thrown out the tap root underwater with no ill effects. Never had one drown that I know of, not saying they cant.

If ya seeds are 10 years old they probably have had the pork sword though.

i haveeee to advise ...... a lot of conjecture .... regardless of what you may have been told ..... seeds that sink dont automatically negate their likelihood for growth .... its also stupid to push the seeds so they sink after floating ..... you think in the wild that the seeds that sink generally make it to the bank of rivers? there is a reason they float .... (theyre made buoyant by oxygen molecules around the rim ...) .... believe it or not, when a seed is placed in straight water it is stressed into germinating quickly ... the seed wants out of the water and germinates more rapidly (in an attempt to germinate itself in time for when a river/waterway transports it downstream ... and it rests upon a bank and nestles itself somewhere it can grow along the waterway)....

I usually add a drop of bleach or two to a small glass with seeds in it ... with only 50mls of water ... and agitate the beans for 15seconds or less and then add water to fill the cup .... then let seeds float on surface .... there are strengths of bleach though .... if you have ultra-strength bleach .... ambiguous scale i know .... only use one or two drops .... normal household cheap bleach ... 3 drops is even fine .... leave in the dark in a cupboard that i have sprayed with bleach ..... for 2 days ..... by then theyve shot their tails out of the opening of the seed.... and are ready for planting ..... the truth is ... you dont have to wait for the tails to pop out .... the surface of the seed softens in the water ... this is enough for promote faster germination ... if youre wondering why i do this .... i consider it important to remove any potential mold spores from the beans with the bleach solution to begin with ... resting them in very dilute bleach will also deter future fungal growth .... ive found when germinating a heap of beans ... it's wise to do this ... as just one bean with microscopic spores can mold the whole bloody cup of water....... (within 2 days !!!)

if you have a decent ammt of seeds at your disposal and dont want to screw around with what ive mentioned above .... just buy yates premium seedling raising mix .... plant seeds at 1/2-1inch deep...... and water ... voila.. ive found that if you germinate beans this way ..... youre likely to have more "no-grow's"/dormant beans that wont sprout from every 10 or 20 planted ....., this is why i mentioned this as being only appropriate if you have a decent ammt of beans ... its possible that planting a limited ammt of beans this way may be unsuccessful.....

ramble,

peace n pot.
