Creating new strains.

Can't find anything at the Cannaversity or in the forums about making new strains. Tried to read an article I googled the other day but it seemed to assume I was a genetic scientist. Just looking for a plain english explanation of techniques for creating new strains. Is there a good guide to selective breeding? What is an F1? Want to learn about this stuff but not having much luck finding good websites. Edited October 30, 2012 by Outlaw

If you want to do a bit of pollen chucking to make a few seeds thats easy. Anyone can do it and plenty do. It's as simple as choosing your best male and best female and letting them do their thing together. If they came from decent smoko then the seeds are generaly good smoko too. It's rare they're not if the parents were good. If you are using hybridised genetics the main drawback is alot of variation in phenos in the offspring but this can also be a desirable thing too, one of them might be the holy grail your searching for.

 

If you want to start selecting for certain traits over generations to create a 'stable' strain for those traits it's alot more involved. Best place to start is by reading about Introduction to genetics and Mendelian inheritance.

I've crossed good male and female plants. Been growing since I was a teenager which is half my life. Just never understood more than selective breeding. Thanks for the links. the rest of your post went completely over my head. No idea yet what a phenotype is. I hear a lot of words like that and stabilisation but have no idea what they mean. I'll try some general gardening websites.
