The reason I dont use pipes often is because when you dont use a filter you will pull hot ash into your mouth and pipes with filters are not common. I could imagine hot ash would give you ulcers or worse.

there are small round mesh thingys ya buy & stick in the bottom of ya conepeice BAM! no ash

True. Any tobacconist can help you out there. I've got a few small pipes. I only ever used them when travelling about. Like camping and stuff. Nobody wants to fudge about with a bong when away from home. Your cones get lost and you foget to take the water out when repacking. Icky bong water smell all through your rucksack.
