Biodynamics: A Spiritual Approach to Agriculture

There is a rich lore on moon rhythms and the life of plants, a lore indicating when the farmer or gardener should sow or manure the land. These traditional rules have endured to modern times with some distortion, and to this day remain, for many, a matter of unreflected belief. Biodynamic researchers are not satisfied to either wholly accept or hastily reject folklore, nor are they helped by superstition or sensationalism. Rather, they insist upon careful and verifiable investigation. The majority of people when asked about the connections of the moon to plant growth will tell you it is the extra gravity (like the tides) that effects plant growth. However, consider that if gravity is responsible for pulling the plant up, in all reality the plant should be growing down, as its main source of gravitational pull would be the center of the earth, not the moon. So, why does a plant grow up?

 

Another way to approach these ideas is the fable of Newton and the apple. The story goes that he was hit on the head by an apple, which allowed him to ponder the concept of gravity. Great story, but it
