You can also get PH meters for about the same price, but I don't know how accurate they would be.

Accurate enough, I use the meter on a probe type one, a water one is also a good idea for the new soil growers too.

If you go to Bunnings, they do a probe for around $20 that is a dual moisture and PH metre. I used it for measuring my moisture levels so I know when to water but to test my PH I use a liquid soil test kit which you can also get from bunnings at around $20 as I don't think the probe is as acurate at measuring the PH as it is the moisture.

 

I've become a bit of a Ph expert this last week as I made the mistake of getting Bunnings organic potting mix which is so alkaline you could start ya car with it!!... and yes I found out the hard way (yellowing stunted seedlings).
