Light Rail

Recommended Posts

My turn to ask a question or two:

I am now boldly going where I have not gone before, I have picked up a not-so-old light rail for the cost of 1/2 an ounce and I would like to hear from members that have successfully used one. The rail uses a push/pull (one behind the other) set up to move the lights, my questions are:

1, what is the optimum distance of travel for my two 430w Son-T's?

2, would there be any advantage in modifying the rail to allow the lights to move side by side rather than in line?

My rail is in my cupboard an only travels 18inches back an forth, when i had more room i used 2metre track with great results, 1 x 400 watt with chinamans hat, now i have ablite air cooled

i think it has to do with your shade design an spread of light, but with rail you can definitely get light closer to plant(more lumens)

hope this helps a bit Tom, as I appreciate your time an effort

cheers Mozz :P

How far does your light(s) travel and what's the wattage?

5 foot, 400 watt light, that pic. before xmas!

hav 1 in cupboard now an the light only travels18 inches- 2 foot (no delay at either end) aircooled ablite shade an i can sit my 400w 4-6 inches away from tips

hav seen a container (while ago) where a guy had 4 rails, end 2 end, 2x 1000w on each rail going back an forth(12 inches above plants), 8x 400w underneath,(its actually where i cut my teeth manicuring) he explained to me then, no hot spots hence lights closer to plants.

room size, type of grow, temp, etc. I think will affect positioning an distance travelled of rail BUT the addition of the rail WILL increase yield

an all 4 1/2 oz, mate your laughing , cheers Mozz :P

G'day Tom,

when I was growing SCROG, I had 6 X 1 square metre screens and vegged six plants to a metre.

I made a cross bar so my 3 X 600 watt HPS, travelled side by side, one light each travelling back and forth over 2 screens.

I bought the one with the 30 second delay at each end but in hindsight I think no delay would have been better so the lights cross over the plants more often.

I could have the unsheilded lights around 75 mm from the top of the tallest bud without scorching and just about all the leaves and buds were getting good light

Here are a few more details, the mover is a "Jupiter II", it has a 12 second delay and while it has not had much use it looks like an older model. The rail is about 8 feet long and from the design of the rail and mover I think I should stick with the push/pull set up, the dimensions of my new grow room are not set in concrete yet so I can re-design it a bit.

The main things I am having trouble finding out about are how big an area my two 430w Son-T's can cover using the rail and how far apart they should be.

Lets say if someone found 2nd hand light rails, and lets say the light rails is 2 metres long, but you want to make the rails shorter, you have to get it cut shorter by a professional or can you do it your self? or the rails have some kind of adjustable thingy/swtich or whatever they are called to stop at certain distance to go back to other end of the rails?

As i have never seen a light rails personally, only in pics.

cheers for ya help guys :P
