Damage to my plants.

hi guys... just checked me plants and there are what looks like small flying ants sittin on top of the soil. leaves havent been touched, but there are a fair few sittin on the soil..also, for about 3 centimeters up the stem from the soil, looks like the stem has been eaten away. Plants look really healthy, but that part of the stem looks like somethins havin a good go at it. Any problem solvers for these 2 would be greatly appreciated.

hi guys an gals...just checked me girls..no more damage to the stems....but there seems ta be heaps of those litttle flying ants still....would it be the flyin ants havin a go at tha stem???

They sound like Fungas Gnats . Something you want to get rid of . I used Maverick at a rate of 5ml per/L and flushed the medium to kill their larvae . It didnt kill all off , but really reduced their numbers !

Not sure if its them doing the stalk damage though Pic could be a little bit clearer

yeah u need to use chemicals to get rid of them as for your soil use a layer of washed river sand 1inch thick the sand will dry out and the gnats wont be able to dig this deep thru the dry sand

What about the drainage holes in the pot ? I often see the gnats coming/going thru the holes .

donno try squashing a peice of washing up sponge in the drainage holes surly they cant eat thru the foam

would be good to get onto this issue asap as these little blighters lay there eggs into the soil and then there larvey hatch theye get onto your root system and begin either feeding on your roots or the nutrience in them cant remember which one but you may start seeing some nute diffs with ya plants if ya dont get it sorted soon
