TORONTO, Canada (AP) -- American officials caution they may be forced to drastically slow trade across the northern U.S. border if the Canadian government relaxes its marijuana laws. The changes being considered by Prime Minister Jean Chretien's government would make the penalty for getting caught with a joint similar to a traffic ticket. By contrast, the zero tolerance policy of the United States makes possession of even small amounts illegal. U.S. drug policy experts say decriminalizing marijuana in Canada will increase drug use in America and trafficking by organized crime elements on both sides of the border. Washington would respond with tighter border check…

I found this article of intense interest, in light of the advice this site recieved from a prominant drug law reformer at heart, and the only guy to really get a chance at change to the drug laws of NSW at least. He is the guy that headed up the gov. committeee into the medical use of pot in NSW for patients that would benifit from it as medicine. He doesn't come from HEMP, he certainly isn't from Nimbin, and inspite of all the hellabaloo that has come from that dirtection; Prof. Wayne Hall accompilshed in a short time what all the "in ya face" protesting couldn't do in 30 years. His advice to us here was simple. He said get some average socially acceptable people tha…

Source: THC Seeds VANCOUVER - The U.S. war on drugs is a miserable failure, New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson said yesterday. "Where I sit as governor of the state of New Mexico ... half of what we spend on law enforcement, half of what we spend on the courts, half of what we spend in the prisons is drug-related," Johnson told a news conference. The governor was among leaders from the business and medical communities and public policy experts at a symposium to explore the economic case for an integrated approach to Vancouver's drug problems. The United States arrests 1.6 million people a year for drug-related crimes, 90% of those for possession only......

Santa Cruz Defies U.S. On Marijuana lead excerpt By William Booth Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, September 18, 2002; Page A03 SANTA CRUZ, Calif., Sept 17 -- There were speeches from lawyers about freedom and pleas from doctors for compassion and some rhetoric against the Bush administration. Then the patients began to roll forward in their wheelchairs to get their prescriptions -- their marijuana buds and pot cupcakes -- on the steps of City Hall. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * THAT is progress. I'd give my left pinkie finger to have such courageous, committed political representation.

Source: The Halifax Herald Limited By Sue Bailey / The Canadian Press Ottawa - Marijuana users who claim the drug is harmless will have their chance to sway Canada's top judges on Dec. 13 - a Friday. Lawyers for three convicted pot smokers will argue that a federal law banning possession of the fiercely debated herb for personal use is unconstitutional. The schedule was announced the same day a Senate committee studying the issue said pot and hashish possession should be legalized for residents 16 or older, and regulated much l…
