Iselin, NJ: The Pharmos pharmaceutical company announced on Tuesday the commencement of the first ever Phase III US study on the effectiveness of the synthetic marijuana derivative Dexanabinol for the treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). An estimated 270 US patients in some 15 trauma centers will take part in the double blind, randomized, placebo controlled trail. US patient recruitment is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Alaskans could get to vote on everything from legalizing marijuana to taxing cruise ships if the sponsors of several proposed 2004 ballot initiatives get their way. Lt. Gov. Loran Leman announced Thursday that a ballot measure to ban bear-baiting had been certified by the Division of Elections, which means that the sponsors can begin the process of collecting more than 23,000 signatures in order to put it on the ballot in November 2004. The measure is the first to be certified for that election, but applications for certification for four other ballot measures have also been received by the Division of Elections. One of B.C.'s most senior appeal court judges says she no longer believes marijuana offences are serious crimes. "While at one time I accepted the received wisdom that marijuana offences were serious crimes, I now am of a different opinion," B.C. Court of Appeal Justice Mary Southin said in a written judgment released Friday. A cannabis-based drug which relieves the symptoms of multiple sclerosis should be available on prescription by the end of the year, it was announced today. GW Pharmaceuticals said Sativex, which contains extracts from whole cannabis plants, is on track for release subject to approval by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). A HIGH-ranking police officer has resigned as a Crime and Misconduct Commission investigation continues into the theft of more than $100,000 from a police safe on the Sunshine Coast. District Superintendent Bob Welch, whose office at Maroochydore station contained the safe which held the missing money, recently resigned. It is unclear when Supt Welch's resignation will take effect. He was one of four police officers whose homes were raided by investigators from the Crime and Misconduct Commission in August last year. Federal Senator Bronwyn Bishop made the pledge after a tour of Top End Aboriginal communities last week. A father of two has been jailed for six months for cultivating cannabis at home using sophisticated equipment, including an ozone generator. Humpty Doo resident Dwight Anthony Brieffies, 42, was caught with 6.085kg of cannabis and four plants in a concealed grow room. He told the Supreme Court the drug was for personal use _ even though he admitted it would have taken him two years to smoke his crop.
