Buckley weighs push for legal pot measure September 28, 2010 Paul Fattig By Paul Fattig Mail Tribune If California voters approve a measure in November to legalize marijuana, Oregon state Rep. Peter Buckley intends to introduce similar legislation when Oregon lawmakers return to Salem in 2011. The Ashland Democrat says the proposed Oregon Cannabis Revenue Act would tax and regulate pot for adult consumption. In addition to raising revenue, Buckley said, it would dramatically reduce criminal activity now associated with it, including the illegal pot gardens now frequently found on area federal forestlands. "But what happens in California is the key," said Buckley…

Calif Measure Shows State's Conflicted Link To Pot permalink California has a long history of defying conventional wisdom on the issue of marijuana, including its embrace of the drug in the 1960s and its landmark medical pot law 14 years ago. So it may not be all that surprising that a November ballot measure to legalize the drug has created some odd alliances and scenarios. Pot growers have opposed it. Some police have favored it. Polls show the public is deeply divided. Only politicians have lined up as expected: Nearly all major party candidates oppose the measure. And hanging over the whole debate is the fact that marijuana remains illegal under federal law. As …

Story on ABC news wedsite My link Study helps marijuana smokers kick the habit By Lindy Kerin Map: Sydney 2000 Researchers at the University of New South Wales have begun a study to try and better understand cannabis withdrawal. Unlike withdrawal from other drugs, like heroin and cocaine, there is no recognised medical syndrome for people who give up cannabis. The researchers hope the study will help develop better treatment programs and eventually lead to a pharmacological substitute to help kick the marijuana habit. Up until three weeks ago Daniel Csatlos says he was smoking a lot of cannabis. "I've been smoking for like five years, pretty much every…

Cherry picking data to prove a point about cannabis Ben Goldacre Saturday March 24, 2007 The Guardian The more I see of the world the more it strikes me that people want more science, rather than less, and that they want to use it in odd ways: to abrogate responsibility, validate a hunch, or render a political or cultural prejudice in deceptively objective terms. As long as you cherry pick the data and keep one eye half closed, you can prove anything with science. Last week's Independent on Sunday splashed with the headline: Cannabis - An Apology. It went on: "In 1997 this newspaper launched a campaign to decriminalise the drug. If only we had known then what we c…

Ex-Officers, Judges Support Calif Pot Legalization WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. A group of former law enforcement officials is endorsing a November ballot measure that would legalize marijuana in California. The group, which includes former or retired police officers, judges and prosecutors, announced Monday in West Hollywood that it supports Proposition 19 because keeping marijuana illegal props up drug cartels and diverts law enforcement from more serious crime. If approved by voters, the proposition would allow adults to possess up to one ounce of marijuana. Local governments would be allowed to tax its sales. Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca recently said he woul…
