What is Samhain?
Samhain (pronounced sah-win) is the harvest festival. A celebration of the end of Summer and the coming of Winter. Or, the end of the long days and the coming of long nights
Also known as Samhainn by Scottish Gaelic folk, Sauin by Manx Gaelic folk, and Oíche Shamhna by Irish folk.
Samhain begins at sunset on April 30th and ends at sunrise on May 1st.
In the Northern Hemisphere it begins at sunset on October 30th and ends as sunrise on November 1st.
It was historically celebrated by the Gaels and was celebrated over the course of several days.
In more recent times it is celebrated by some Irish people, Scottish people, Celtic Neopagans, Polytheists.
Some Neopagans celebrate Samhain as a religious festival.
It has come to be known and celebrated commercially as Halloween.
Common celebration activities include bonfires, guising (commonly known as 'trick or treating',) divination, apple bobbing, and of course, feasting.
