Seed in my bowl.

So I was choppin and all of a sudden, a seed is in my bowl. so it got my thinking.
I'm so noob at this but anyway.
I soaked the seed in water over a couple of nights. grabbed a small pot and some soil out of the garden. now its sitting under a window in my bedroom.
Problem! - the seed hasn't opened. (according to some sites that's supposed to happen) Does this mean its a Bad seed?? or is this a common thing and the seed will work?? how long should I have to wait until I see something growing??
