Compact Fluros AND Normal Light Bulbs?

Recommended Posts

Question.

My friend told me today that if your doing a small indoor grow using compact fluros (as i am about to) that it is good for the plant to have a CF and a normal light bulb. Apparently they cover the spectrum better (CF's being blue, and normal bulbs red), as this would do them better thru veg and flowering.

I have got 2 CF's (15W & 18W Energy Saving Warm Whites) and am wondering what would be better, the 2 CF's or 18W CF plus a normal 80W light bulb?

I'm also pretty sure that the "Warm White" CF's are more in the red band, less in the blue, if anyone knows for sure, i'd appreciate an answer.

Also, no replies telling me I'm a fool for growing with CF's and should get a HPS!!

Thanks in advance stoners!!

:thumbsup :) :thumbsup

Yeah, cool white cf's have a bluish spectra, while warm white would have all the red you'd need.

I'd recommend looking for a Spectrum 130w lamp instead, gives all the light you need, it's essentially a 130w version of a compact fluoro, and you can get it in three types, marine blue, daylight and flowering (14000k, 6400k and 2700k respectively.)

Your friend would be wasting electricity, and generating excess heat. :)

If you're really interested in going with smaller globes, I'd suggest looking for the Nelson 48w compact fluoros, these at least put out a bit more in light than the 18-20w normal types.

You'd be better with more cool whites than warms, and the more wattage you have in the individual globes the better, which is why the Spectrum 130w units are such a good idea. About 90 odd bucks, but no ballast required, and all you need is a lamp holder for a standard hps/mh globe. These can be obtained without reflectors for about 30 bucks. ;)

About 20 years ago when growing with tube fluoros I would have agreed with him for the flower cycle, now that we CF's I would say to just pile in more of them instead.

I agree with Luke here, if you are going with CF's then you should strongly consider one or two of these or at least the 48w ones.

Thanks Luke & Tom, info much appreciated.

As for the Spectrum 130W lamps, i'd like to, but they're a bit expenisve, plus my grow area is VERY limited space wise.

I am going to try and get 1 or 2 Nelson 48w's after I've saved a bit.

Otherwise, thanks very much.

(By the way, I'll make sure I slap my friend for his idiocy)
