Cannabis crops exchanged for heroin

Recommended Posts

HYDROPONIC cannabis crops are being grown in Melbourne homes by crime syndicates, then exchanged for heroin in Sydney.

Police say criminals are using about five rented suburban houses at a time to grow cannabis worth millions of dollars.

The operations uncovered in ongoing investigations were "organised crime at its best", Victoria police drug investigation spokesman Detective Superintendent Tony Biggin said.

"Cannabis is not a drug of choice for most of these people, just a very lucrative cash crop," Det-Supt Biggin said.

The crops of about 100 plants would sell for $250,000, which was enough to buy three 350-gram blocks of heroin worth $1 million each.

"The cannabis is grown in Melbourne, transported to Sydney and swapped for heroin, which is brought back to Melbourne and sold here," Det-Supt Biggin said.

So plants are now worth 2,500 each which means they are saying each one is going to yield 10+ ounces, and then how do they figure you can get $3 million worth of Heroin for a quarter of the price of one block, I think Det-Supt Biggin needs to put a little more effort into his maths.

Just caught the end of Border Security, Customs got a guy trying to smuggle a kilo of heroin into the country and they reckon that it would only have a street value of $600,000, not nearly $3,000,000 as Detective Superintendent Tony Biggin would claim. :peace:
