Weapons and drugs seized in raids

Recommended Posts

POLICE have seized almost 250kg of ammunition, detonators, weapons and drugs in suburban Canberra.

ACT police carried out three simultaneous raids in the inner southern suburb of Yarralumla yesterday morning.

A 44-year-old man is helping officers with their inquiries.

Police said the raids had been planned for several weeks following community information about an alleged cache of potentially dangerous material being stored in a suburban home and garage.

"Territory Investigations Group detectives seized thousands of rounds of ammunition, as well as three firearms and two silencers," said deputy chief police officer Commander Shane Connelly.

"The bomb response team, as well as firearms and armoury officers were called in to help safely secure the ammunition before it was transported to a secure police storage facility.

"Detectives also discovered extensive lengths of detonator cords and powder during the operation.

"Illegal drugs including suspected amphetamine and cannabis was seized, and a hydroponic drug-growing set-up was discovered in the garage."

Commander Connelly said a 44-year-old man was helping police with their investigations and was facing a range of firearms and drugs charges.

He will remain in custody before appearing in the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow.

A man in possession of unlicensed explosives, ammunition and firearms and drugs has been released on bail from a Canberra court.

Police raided the home 44-year-old Roger William Thomson on Saturday.

The court heard he lives at a Yarralumla home with his parents and once held a licence for explosives and firearms which has since expired.

Thomson's lawyer told the court he used the explosives for rabbit holes at his two rural properties outside the ACT.

Four cannabis plants and amphetamines were also found at the house.

The court was told that police were concerned more evidence against Thomson could be at his properties.

He was released on bail on the condition that he does not go to his properties while they are being investigated by police.
