first time trying to grow, need some help maybe

Recommended Posts

hello Everyone, and anyone.

I am going to try growing for the first time, and want to get some input form those that know.

I want to grow somthing like 4 plants indoors. I am going to make a box out of cardboard (try to make no light come out as much as possible), line it with foil. I have a 500w halogen floodlight, but it gets very hot. What I would like to know is how tall should I make the box, and what's the min distance should I keep the top of the plants from the light. And, is 4 plants enough, too much for this light. How many fans do I need. Also, can I just use regular fans that I can get at any store? and should I just blow the fan at the light to cool it, or at the plants?

Should I take the plants out during the day so they can get fresh air or is the fan enough? I'm growing in a garage, so it's not going to have too much fresh air circulating in there.

My plans are to keep the light on 24 hours a day for 4 weeks, and then drop to 14 hours light, then 12 hours light. What I understand is that at this point, it should start to flower.

Based on what I've been reading, I should be able to go from seed to smoke in like 2 1/2 months. Let me know if this is correct. Also, how much smokable buds can I get from 4 plants? One more thing. I know that I need to seperate the males from the females when they start to flower, but is it easy to tell the two apart? what do I do with the males? just throw them away?

Thanks in advance for the help. I'll be asking more questions as it goes, so thanks for that as well.

High there method, Welcome to Oz Stoners.

That's one hell of a fire risk and both foil and halogen lights are a waste of time in a grow room, check out some of the links in my signature for more information on lighting. You can get the answers to your questions and more with pictures by browsing around the grow forums, the grow diaries would be a good place to start.

It's possible but you wouldn't get much yield per plant, you need to allow time for proper drying and curing too.

forget the cardboard and make something out of wood or an old wardrobe or something . paint it white inside . I dont think a halogen flood light will be suitable at all . get a high pressure sodium grow light . you will need a good extraction fan and that will be enough airflow , no need to take the plants out .

read the FAQs and threads on this site to get a starting point .

good luck

Hey guys, thanks. I said I was new... :)

OK. I'll get a used wardrobe somewhere and so as you guys say.

Question, what wattage should the light be? and only get one? I'll paint the inside white as suggested, and not use foil.

How long do you think it'll be before I can harvest? and what yield should 4 plants get me?

a normal size sort of wardrobe say 1800x1200x400 would be good for a 400w high pressure sodium but you will need good extraction to keep the heat down .

growing from seed will probably take you 3-4 months for a good yield . say 6-8weeks veg and 6-8 weeks flower .

you could get 10+ oz if you are lucky and nothing goes wrong , but if its your first grow Id be happy with half that of fully dried bud

10 oz per plant, or 10 oz for 4 plants? when you say extraction, do you mean fans?

also, what's a clone? I also heard that if I keep the light on 24 hours a day for 4 weeks, then move to 12 hours light cycle, I can force flowering quicker. (High Times Magazine) Is that true?

Also, what should I expect quality to be like? The reason that I'm growing, is that I'm from the US, and frankly, I don't like the quality of the stuff that I get around here. I want to grow some of the kind of stuff that I used to get back home in LA (shipped in from Canada, and Washington. Really good quality stuff). I know that oz has some REALLY good shit around, but hell if I can find any.

10 oz from a wardrobe size grow chamber would be pretty good for all 4 plants . its theoretically possible to pull pounds but thats what most people seem to get out of a space like that going from the grow diaries on here . if its your 1st time expect something to go wrong .

if you put a HPS light in that space it will get hot so you will need a good extraction fan to get rid of the air . you local hydro shop will help you out .

you can switch to flower at 4 weeks but it will affect the yeild , less veg time , smaller plants , less yield

a clone is simply a cutting of the plant , that then grows roots and becomes another plant . its the same as the plant you took the cutting from . so if you take a cutting of a female , the clones are too .

quality is probably more dependant on the strain than anything else , although you can stuff things up in the grow to affect the quality . Order some good quality seeds from a seedbank . I personally like planet skunk and xpat seeds , especially if your in oz . they have forums on the site . the quality will be much better than street pot bag seeds .
