Unhealthy Plant, Why?

Recommended Posts

Hey,

my poor plant is looking rather down and i am not sure why and how to fix it (if possible).

problem: lower leaves are losing their colour, turning yellow and wilting, my question, is this due to:

a) Natural wilting of lower leaves (i've heard that the bottom leaves can just drop off with no problem i think)

:detective2: A lack of secondar nutrients (maybe iron, magnesium or manganese)

c) Root problem, as you can see the plant has outgrown it's pot and roots are growing out the bottom. I would prefer not to transfer plant to bigger pot yet as i plan to cut out the bottom of pot and whack in ground in a few weeks and just want a healthy plant to survive the transplant.

d) Wrong growing season (yes, i know it's winter, i knew this when i started, but wanted to grow nonetheless)

or

e) All of the above (or something else?)

Here's a few pics:

First, the roots growing out of the pot:

Next, the bottom of plant, as you can see the lowest leaves are yellowy brown and wilting, the leaves above are losing their colour:

Here's a pic of the whole plant, as you can see i built it up a bit in summer but now it's small and trying to cope with winter:

And lastly a nice close-up of the "biggest bud you've ever seen". hehe, just kidding, here's the top:

Thank You in advance

Damn shit, damn damn!!

No, tom, i'm not using a fan to help stem growth, but am giving it the odd flick and bend and it's gets a fair whack of wind as it is. I will attempt to strengthen it further.

As for being rootbound (god damn roots) do you think it would have good chances of surviving being transplanted direct into grund outdoors? If so, any tips on how to do this (i can't remember whether soil should be wet or dry when transplanting). Also should i try and remove soil attached to roots when transplanting by brushing it off or would i be okay maybe cutting out bottome of pot and whacking in ground?

Thanks a bunch for your help!!

Your soil need to be prepared according to expected conditions..if your going to put it outside now Id get some good potting mix with water retention agents in it..dig a hole 2 x the depth of your current pot and twice as wide and soak the crap outa it till all the surrounding soil is saturated. Then add your potting mix and soak again then make your hole for the root structure and try to trnsplant as much of the soil with it as you can without damaging the root stock. Hold off giving it nutes for a short time as the preium mix has nutes in it...etc etc

As for being rootbound..its hard to say..it your bubs flowering it will be putting all of its energy into bud production and you might have a basic nute deficiency or it may be strain related

well im glad that someone else is having the same problem as me, sorry infinitee but its just a hard to find problem :thumbdown

it needs to be transplanted asap, maybe into a bigger pot but as you said you would prefer to put it in the ground, find its final home, dig yourself a big ass hole and fill it with top grade soil and if you can afford it, rain saver crystals will save you so much effort in carrying water around that its not funny :) i would probably dig the hole about 1.5-2ft across and about 3-4ft deep to ensure the roots have a large area to spread out...if you dig too small a hole and the surrounding soil is really hard ie. the soil has mass clay in it, the clay can act like a pot and make the plant root bound again :thumbdown or if the walls of the hole are really soft, surrounding plants can have their roots enter your plants space and steal nutes and water :thumbdown so just pick your spot carefully and treat the soil as needed....

the yellowing isnt much to be afraid of unless you think it looks bad in which case your gonna hate it when they start to completely die off as they will look diseased as all hell :thumbdown

just remember that the longer u leave the plant like that, the worse it will get and eventually, it'll die :thumbdown

What are you trying to make me sad? hehe

No biggie, a plant is a plant and it's all a learning curve for me, so it's probably better i have these problems earlier on so i'll know how to deal with them.

I will attempt a transplant within a week (hopefully). And would I be correct in assuming that it's a bad idea to cut out bottom of pot and hope roots will grow out (well they already have), coz i've had a bit of a bad experience transplanting before (pretty much killed it). Damn fragile roots.

Thanks again, guys!!

not trying to make you sad at all :)

i agree, its better to have these problems earlier on so in the future, a whole big budded plant doesnt go to waste as you have the experience and know how to fix the problem :)

as for cutting out the bottom of the pot, that will work fine as long as you dont cut the roots to severly but for the best results possible, those roots need as much room to spread out as possible which means planting directly in the ground would probably be your best option...
