Marijuana most commonly used drug

Recommended Posts

Marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug in Australia, but the rise in ecstasy and amphetamine use is more concerning, a new report shows.

The Illicit Drugs Report, prepared and released by the Australian Crime Commission (ACC), found more than 11 tonnes of illicit drugs had been seized and 79,000 people arrested during the last financial year.

"Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug in Australia," the report revealed.

And with more than 40,000 arrests during the last financial year and no evidence in a reduction in consumption, it was likely to remain a popular drug into the forseeable future, it said.

But ACC chief Alastair Milroy said despite marijuana's widespread appeal, figures on the party drug ecstasy were a far greater worry.

The report found 20 per cent of the 20 to 29-year-old age group had admitted to experimenting with the drug.

"There is a continued concern regarding the production and demand for amphetamine type stimulants," he said.

"MDMA/ecstasy remains a dominant form of amphetamine that is being produced, imported and used in Australia."

While the main producers of ecstasy continued to be clandestine laboratories in the Netherlands and Belgium, local producers and Australia's regional neighbours were also getting in on the act.

As a result of these ready and willing suppliers, the report found ecstasy was easily obtainable in the marketplace.

"MDMA (ecstasy) is most commonly sourced via the internet (through chat rooms), by word of mouth or via links to friends and associates," the report said.

Meanwhile, Justice and Customs Minister Chris Ellison praised the efforts of Australian law enforcement agencies for their relentless approach to stopping drugs.

"The report reveals that the amount of heroin seized at the border for 2003-2004 is the lowest recorded in a decade, while cocaine seizures are at their lowest level since 1998-1999," he said.

But on the downside, the increasing demand for amphetamines and, in particular crystal methylamphetamine (ice) which stimulate the nervous system, was likely to inspire an increase in illegal drug trafficking and perhaps domestic production.

I don't want to sound like one of these wankers that think what I do (smoke)

is the safest form of rec drugs, but I saw a doco on what meth can do to a person

and their body. I know that they would be highlighting the worst case scenarios

but with just one use and the wrong dose you can literally fry your brain and/or

your nervous system. You don't know what to believe because I have heard whole host of shit about dope as well, and maybe if I had of heard it 20 years ago, my opinion on dope might be different and I may never have tried it in the first place.

But one thing always comes back to me and that is one product is 100% natural found in the ground the other is a cocktail of chemicals and if a mad man is making it you could end up with cyanide, hydrocholric acid, or anything else if he is a mad man. I wouldn't trust a pill because you just don't know.
