timer troubles

Recommended Posts

Hi peoples, Having problems with 3 different timers turning on 600w HID.

Was using hpm heavy duty first (came with the light package), the light stopped coming on after about a week. Replaced with a hpm cheapy one went on the first day and not the next. Just tried the old hpm pin type this doesnt work either.

I spoke to the hydroshop and they told me I needed a digital one.

Is anyone using a 600w lamp with a hpm heavy duty timer, Im sure this should work, otherwise why would they sell it to me in the lighting package?

Any suggestions?

PS Great site great info, Ive been lurking in the background for years

I'd check out your home power supply, I've used to the same cheap hpm timers for a few years no problem, Id be wary of digital timers i dont think there as tough as the cheaper ones plus you can loose all your setings in a pwr cut, also the starting of a grow light spikes the pwr and can do things to timers.

I only ever use the 15amp arlec digitial timers - never ever had any problems - just replace the batteries after each grow.

Heaps better then the analog timers, if there is a black out they dont need resetting and ive found that the analog timers have really come down in quality over the last couple of years.

I use a "Growbot" brand timer, it handles up to 4 x 600w lights with no problems as it is designed to run HID's, they are a little pricey but I have not had a timer problem since I bought it, I got mine second-hand but hydro stores in WA stock them.

i went through 3 arlec timers and have been turning my lights on manually for the last couple of months. talk about a pain in the ass. so i said to myself fuck this shit, i cant do this crap everyday and im not going to fork out more cash for crap. so i decided on this monster

Heavy Duty 10 Amp 4 Outlet/Twin Clocks :smoke

some people have no trouble with timers and other can go through heaps of timers and coin trying to find a good one. i guess its just down to luck

Thanks everyone for your input. The dude at my local hydroshop gave me a free digital timer he had out the back (didnt know what was wrong with it, so he should, im a frequent visitor:) So far so good. Sometimes it feels like theres one problem after another with growing, but hey I always come out smiling at the end, well 8/10.

Jifto nice timer.

That's one of the things that, in my opinion, makes growing mj much more addictive than the drug itself, and after having grown it indoors no other plant seems as rewarding. ::(: Keep us posted on your grow. :D

You've usually got to re-set so much other shit any way when the power goes out, is it really that much of a hassle?

I had a $55 digital shit itself after one grow but the $20 HPM is going no probs.

It all comes down to what sort of lighting yo want to run, the $20 HPM is not going to control multiple HID lights, the one that jjfto has shown could possibly be used to handle four of them and having two timers would allow you to run a veg room at 18/6 and the flower room at 12/12 from the one board.

Hi kyles4smiles,

I have been using one for 1 full (full size) grow and into my second with no problems at all with timers. but you need to mamke sure the unit used to switch your light (i light = 1 timer strictly) is a genuine heavy duty not cheap crap. As for all teh other items in a grow room that use timers - a cheapy works fine.

But like all smart growers - make sure you have at least 2 timers spare ready (1 heavy & 1 cheapy) plus spare airpump and nutrient pump.

The above gives you no end of confidence in your grow.

good luck

:thumbsup
