Police defend fatal shooting

Recommended Posts

Victorian Police have defended the tactics of the Special Operations Group (SOG) after the second fatal police shooting in the state this year.

The elite unit shot dead a 29-year-old man during a raid on a home in Brooklyn in Melbourne's west this morning.

Officers say they were investigating an attempted murder and drug crimes and have seized a number of cannabis plants.

Commander Terry Purton says special operations officers did not use excessive force.

"From all that I've been told this morning, and throughout the day, there's no suggestion members have entered that house guns blazing," he said.

"You must take every situation on its merit.

"If you're entering a house and it's a high-risk raid and the Special Operations Group are authorised to do searches. They are only done in very rare occasions."

The man died from a single gun-shot to the neck and a police officer was also injured in the raid.

"Shortly after the shooting, family members of the deceased man scuffled with police," a police spokesperson said.

"One man shouting abuse and threatening police was forced to the ground and handcuffed by officers; he was released soon after."

Authorities say eight people have been arrested in the raids.

I hope the LEO's can come up with a better reason for this sort of raid than "a number of cannabis plants".

The saga continues.....

The father of a man shot dead by police yesterday has told his lawyers he is too overcome by grief to appear in court.

Macchour Chaouk, 58, made no appearance in court this morning.

He has been charged with attempted murder and drugs offences.

His sons, Ali, 24, and Matwali, 21, sat in the dock handcuffed amid tight security.

Their brother Mohamed, 29, was shot dead by police early yesterday morning during a raid on the family's Brooklyn home.

The attempted murder charge related to an incident where an associate of the family was shot in the chest.

The trio has applied to the court for permission to attend Mohamed's funeral tomorrow.

Outside court family members accused police of using excessive force.

Police say the dead man threatened officers with a sword.

They will reappear in court in August.

Looks like the Chaouk family may not be all that innocent either, wonder if the guy that got shot in the chest was an police informer that got caught out? Wonder who their lawyers are, expensive big name ones or Legal Aid?

Thoss "drug crimes" must be pretty serious, some areas of Vic may experience a shortage of supply for a little while.

its all very well for the cops to raid a house with guns blazing - but sooner or later someones going to shoot back - and you watch how quickly them cowardly cops run.

suppose thats why australian goverment disarmed the hole population with gun laws - so when the people rise up, they wont be able to shoot back.

A little more about it....

Relatives of a man shot dead by police during a raid in Melbourne yesterday, have been implicated in an attempted murder.

Police say the bust, in which a 29-year-old man was shot dead during the early morning raid in Brooklyn in Melbourne's west, was part of an investigation into organised crime.

Four men have been refused bail and remanded in custody.

They are the dead man's brothers Ali, 24, and Matwali Chaouk, 21, their father Macchour Chaouk, 58, and an associate of the family Anthony Gerard Philpot, 47.

Mr Philipot is charged with property offences, while the three members of the Chaouk family are facing multiple drugs charges.

Ali Chaouk is also accused of the attempted murder of an unidentified man who had known the family for 15 years.

It was alleged Macchour Chaouk helped with the shooting, restraining the man so his son could shoot him.

This is the reason and the reason alone, i invest in samurai swords, leathal booby traps and vicious guard dogs. If am going to be killed or have my life taken away because of a difference of opinion- them i will condemn those gangster, week pick cowards to hell, with the same waepons they posses (still to get my own pepper spray yet...) There is no action without conciquence. grow weed, harvest pot. have a difference of opinion- have an arguement, take someones life by imprisonment or death, then they can expect the same in return. I sware as god is my witness- i will take as many of those cowards to hell with me as i can.

They only burn our crops to stand around and get bent anyway. Hypocrits.
