Quiet ventilation fan?

Recommended Posts

the 150mm fan are allways noisey little basters, you have the cheap black 150mm inline fan that all hydro sells and then you can move up to the TD500 150mm, both fans are noisey are fuck , because your trying to shift large amounts of air through a small hole and this causes noise.

I have in the past made my own silencer for the 150mm fans and used proper insulated duct to shift the air. The silencer consisted of a small box made of timber and linned with two layers of 16mm plasterboard and then stuffed with rockwool insulation, rubber mounts inside and out to stop vibration.

You can also buy a tenuater with goes somewhere in the duct line which stops much of the noise as the air passes through the duct

The best option if ya really worried about noise from the fan is to get a slow speed 600mm inline as these make no noise and shift about the same as a 150mm high speed fan.

Another option (probally a bit dear for most people) is a squirrel factory fan with speed control - in my option these are the bomb of fans - moves more air then a TD800 and is quiter then a 600mm slow speed.

Another option is to get RC A/C installed in ya house and leave that sucker turned on when everything is still. The neighbours will get used to the noise of the A/C and it will hide the fan noise.

Nothing worse then late at night when the air is really still the bloody fan sounds lke a freight train outside in ya yard.

Thanks for the info Jackfrost!

600mm.. wow thats a big fan! Where would I find one of them?

It doesnt have to be 150mm, thats just a size I assumed would suit for the application. Currently I have 200mm industrial extraction fan I found in the warehouse where I work - this thing sounds like a jet airplane taking off on full blast! I fitted a fan speed controller to it which brings it down to a more sedate speed but its still bloody noisy! Now I have moved into a new house and its less of a bachelor pad which I was previously living in and more of a 'home' which I'm sharing with a female friend so we want things a little more discreet

I might look at one of the larger inline fans and reduce the speed using my fan speed controller?

Cheers,
