Drug factory found at farm

Recommended Posts

A "sophisticated" drugs factory containing hundreds of cannabis plants with a street value of up to £100,000 has been found at a north Shropshire farm.

Detectives discovered the crop of nearly 400 plants being cultivated in a disused pig shed yesterday.

They believe the building, between Whitchurch and Market Drayton, had been rented out by a local farmer to two men from the north-west of England.

The farmer has been spoken to on suspicion of being concerned with the production of cannabis and inquiries are continuing to find the people who grew the plants.

Detective Constable Rob McNamara said today: "The building was full of neat rows of cannabis plants about four or five feet tall.

"It was a highly sophisticated and well-planned cannabis nursery with a total of 379 plants.

"They appeared to be ready for harvesting and with repeat harvests their potential street value would be around £100,000."

He said the plants, which were grown from seeds and believed to be the first crop, were individually potted inside a polythene tent housed within the brick building.

They were heated by overhead spotlamps and a watering system had been set up.

The equipment has now been dismantled and the plants have been taken to Shrewsbury police station for destruction.

The picture shows that the plants were in veg and poorly tended.
